“An affordable option in the heart of historic La Candelaria”
Reviewed April 23, 2011

As noted there are two hostals: Hostal Sue, at Calle 16 no. 2-55, and Hostal Sue Candelaria, at Carerra 3 no. 14-18. They are just a couple of blocks from each other, both just off Parque de los Periodistas in the crumbling, historic La Candelaria Centro.

I stayed at Hostal Sue, in a private room with shared bath (36,000 COP, or about $20 US/night). Hostal Sue is a friendly place, and it's easy to meet people there. Guests were mostly in their 20s and 30s, some South Americans, and quite a few Europeans and Australians. If you're in your 20s or 30s (in fact or at heart ;) and look most to lively evenings out, this is a great place for you. If you spend most of your time with daytime explorations and want to go to bed early and have lots of quiet, another place might be better - the nearby, similarly-priced Chocolate Hostel maybe.

There is wi-fi and the showers are hot. No breakfast.

The location of the hostal - I'm sure there will be varying opinions, depending on what people are used to. I thought the location was great, and felt totally safe there, walking around the neighborhood day and night, but I am from the big city. Obviously, whenever you are walking around a big city, anywhere, you want to be smart about it and look like you belong and know where you're going. I saw more security (all sorts of various types of police and military, many with dogs) and street sweepers than I have seen anywhere in the US, but also I got the feeling that they were there for the people, not to crack down on the people, as I have gotten the sense elsewhere. The streets are pretty lively, there are many universities in La Candelaria so the sidewalks are full of students many nights, talking, hanging around, drinking beers. Lots of opportunities for good, inexpensive food and beer, and the park is scenic. It's also quite easy to get around - inexpensive taxis, and the main bus lines go right through here.

If your main criteria are being in the middle of it and stretching your budget, Hostal Sue is a good choice for you.

First of all there are 2 hostel Sue. There is Sue 1 and Sue 2. I stayed at Sue 1 which is smaller than Sue 2 and had a great time. It has really nice staff which i always found chatty, attentive and relaxed. The place had a nice vibe and good energy which i felt when i first arrived to check if they had any rooms. It has a relaxing TV room with dvds, Free internet and a Free light breakfast. Coffee or tea, rolls, butter, jam and muesli. Same price as pretty much everyone is charging in the area but you dont pay for internet and breakfast. The mattresses are a little on the hard side but i slept fine. Some people did complain about there only being 2 bathrooms but i didnt find this a problem, if your a bit impacient you might but the pros outway the cons i think. It feels really homely and comfortable here. I really enjoyed my stay. Thanx Sue :-)

My wife and I booked a double room with an attached bathroom at Hostal Sue before leaving the States. The day before were to have reached, we got a message form someone called Paula saying that the room was no longer available and that we'd have to take a double room without bathroom. So we decided that we'd like our deposit back and that we'd look elsewhere. When I passed this message on to Paula, i got another reply saying, "No problem, the room is available now". Well, we thought great and then landed up at the Hostal at about midnight. Once we were inside we were shown a tiny single room and when i told the guy at reception that we had booked a double room with bath attached, he flatly shook his head and said that this was the only room available. No apology nothing, pretty much take it or leave it. When we stood our ground they decided to have us moved to the Hostal Aventuras down the road, which was quite a shabby little dump with the most dirty toilets we've ever seen. We checked out the next day and instead stayed at this little hostel down the road, Hospedaje Hibiscus, which was clean and very professionally run- and quite cheap too at about 40,000 pesos for a double room. Not having stayed in Hostal Sue, i cannot comment on their rooms and facilities, but certainly I'd be careful before making a reservation.

I highly recommend Hostal Sue. The staff, particularly Luisa and Paola, are always friendly and helpful. The place is kept spotless. Sue has all the amenities you'd need, three free internet terminals as well as free wireless. A great TV room with three couches, a big flat screen and excellent surround sound. Ping pong table, lots of info on things to do, and of course, a great bar with lots of seating, $1 beers, and great music.
Bogota has an underdeveloped tourism infrastructure right now, and if I hadnt have stayed at Sue and met people to hang out with, and venture out ; I would have been terribly bored. Sue is THE hostel to hang out at, as people from several other hostels spent time at Sue as well.
Some might complain about the noise. The bar shuts off the music promptly at midnight, and I had no trouble sleeping from then on until around 8am when activity in the central courtyard gets loud. Im sure you can find a quieter place if that's your priority, but I valued the connections with other travelers made at Sue.

We stayed only one night. It's not cheap if you take in account that you can't sleep if you want because of the noise. There is a bar in the middle of the hostal and people shouting all night. If you want to sleep and relax, you should find another place.

Stayed only one night. this Hostel was full of extremely annoying loud mouth crusty Brits and a couple of slimy Israelis that were really going out of there way to annoy others.
Big beer party in the garden with people screaming and cussing.
It was obvious that even the people working were not too impressed either.
If your looking to hang out, drink beer and hear stories of Drug consumption from low life backpackers or Israeli idiots finishing up their military duties, then you might like this place.
we didnt.

the hostel is in a great location, close to loads of attraction and sights. we had a private room but the common rooms are always busy and friendly. free internet and very helpful staff who went out of their way to find stuff out for us. highly reccommended, although the breakfast is limited!
