Me and 3 friends travelled here over the holidays and have nothing but GREAT things to report. Extremely helpful staff with strong english skills and willing to do anything for you! They even organized a traditional meal for us for Christmas, delicious. If you are interested in a cheaper version they have a hostel up the street but spurge for the hotel its worth the few extra pesos!

Room Tip: It is a bit noisey on the first floor

I love the Candelaria district of Bogotá with its colonial houses. The Casa Platypus, just off the conveniently located Parque de los Periodistas, is one them, so this means loads of atmosphere - and drafts from the windows and the roof...

Once you are inside, the friendly staff will make you feel at home right away. You can grab a free beer or water or help yourself to coffee or tea. The cozy front room reception doubles as lounge / internet access area (there are several up-to-date PCs plus printer!).

The buildings consists of two floors, so you might have to drag your bag up some narrow wooden stairs. All rooms face the courtyard and there is also a small roof-top terrace with nice views of the surrounding jumble of houses and the mountains. The rooms are all in tone with the colonial architecture so expect a smallish, sparsely furnished room. There is comfortable bed, a nightstand with reading light, possibly a little wardrobe and that´s it, but hey, that´s all you need, isn´t it? The bathrooms are modern and quite spacious, especially compared to the room itself. All rooms I saw had windows with blinds towards the courtyard. Due to the altitude (ca. 2700 m.a.s.l.) expect chilly nights and be prepared to feel drafts of cold air from the doors, windows or the roof. Yet with all the blankets you should manage to survive without frostbites (even I did, and I really don´t like the cold). But I guess you´ll really appreciate the piping hot water in the shower in the morning.

Breakfast is included and leaves nothing to be desired - cereals, bread, jam, yoghurt, juice, coffee, eggs and fruit. What more could you ask for?

The location is great, all the major attractions are within easy walking distance (which is quite safe to do during the day, at night however it´s highly advisable to stick to livelier streets and leave your valuables in the Casa Platypus) and there are several Transmilenio stops a few minutes away. The Candelaria district also is where many students go out, so expect a lot of noise from the party crowds at night and way into the morning (ear plugs might be a really good idea!).

If it weren´t for the noise and the drafts, the Casa Platypus would certainly receive five points, if only for the ever helpful staff. Anyway, if I go back to Bogotá, I´ll go back to the Casa Platypus!

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor and on the right hand side of the patio seem to be a bit less noisy.

I had a fantastic stay at Casa Platypus. When there was no availability in the dorm room, they didn't turn me away but just upgraded me to a small single! This was only the beginning of the hospitality I felt here at this hotel. The staff constantly assisted me with recommendations of where to eat, even going so far as in helping me call for pizza on one rainy evening! They also told me which buses to take when I was determined to see Northern Bogota and I would surely have gotten lost without their directions. They even had a stock of umbrellas to lend their guests!
I also had no idea that the hotel would be so easy to find and in such a safe spot of Candelaria. I felt I could walk around and always make it back to the hotel without problem. It's very close to the main sights of the area-Gold Museum, Botero, Bolivar Square and Monserrate. The room itself was very clean and cozy. The only negative of the entire experience was the sporadic shower head but it was constant hot water with pressure. The breakfast was great with fresh fruit, eggs, bread and juice tea or coffee.
There is a nice travel agency around the corner and up the hill called Bogotravel. They have great bike tours and speak English.
Thanks to all the staff at Casa Platypus for making my stay in Bogota relaxing and fun!

Stayed there in a triple room in September. The room was cold and so I had to ask for an extra blanket. The skylights in the room were nice but they let a lot of light in so I woke up way before the alarm went off.
The staff was super helpful and it was great that they had a safe that we could use. Good location but on a busy street so it was a little loud at night. Also good that they took credit cards.

Casa Platypus is in the best part of town, La Candelaria. There's a lot of student action here, and it can be loud at night (sometimes all night!), but it's a great area for tourists, as major attractions are just a short walk away. The staff is absolutely wonderful - very knowledgeable and helpful. They'll assist you with where to go and how to get there whether you're staying in Bogota or leaving for another city. All of those we met are fluent in English as well as Spanish, and probably some other languages as well. The breakfasts are substantial and delicious. As evidence of the reputation of the place, there were some amazing guests there during our stay - lawyers working on a human rights project, tourists from Germany, France, the US, and elsewhere, and missionaries working in Nicaragua who were on a brief holiday. A huge part of our travel experience is meeting other people and learning about their countries, jobs, etc. - and Casa Platypus is a great place to do that.

Geat place to be at the top of La Candaleria. A little noisy at night from people moving around in the hotel but external noises from the street weren't an issue. Felt safe the whole time and staff are very helpful. Beds are good, bathrooms are clean and pretty new. Get up early for hot water in the mornings, rest of the day is ok.

We loved the Casa because it was so colonial and close to everything we wanted to see. We walked to the gold museum, botero and monserrate tram. The staff were really helpful with maps and directions. Very internatoonal hotel. Highly recommend!!
