Just on the outskirts of La Paz proper, Moon Valley is an otherwordly landscape that recalls other locations like Bryce Canyon, Utah. Spires of sandstone rock are arranged in intricate, seemingly endless formations. A well marked path makes for an easy self guided tour of the park which can be viewed easily in an hour at a leisurely pace (and without too much effort even for those still acclimatizing to the altitude!)

A great attraction for La Paz that is, thankfully, now protected. It is a bit like walking on the moon. All the weird and wonderful, shapes around are hard to explain. Well worth a visit but a shame suburbia was allowed to encroach.

Our guide brought us here and it is literally like being on another planet. There is a 45 minute trail around this site which is ample time to take in this place.
Its a shame that there is development up to this sights edges but then our guide told us it is not fully protected. So come on people, its a great place for 1 hour and the more people that visit may make Bolivia realise they have a great sight here.

This used to be a place of magic when there was nothing else around. Nowadays Mallasa, where the "Valley of the Moon" is located, is full of housing projects, the road (no longer a dirt road) is saturated of cars and we have lost the deep silence, which was much appreciated when you were "walking in the moon". Still, there are a couple of spots when you can feel the sensation of the weird landscape, mad and clay strange formations that have been shaped over the decades by rain and wind. I remember from my childhood a very tall one, about 8 meters high, which had a large stone on top in delicate balance. This is gone now. Still, you can visit de "cactario", the cactus park, which an interesting attraction.

I came in July 2011

It is beautiful. Like craters on the moon, which is what the name of this location means. Craters everywhere. Huge and aweinspiring. I highly highly recommend taking a trip here. Just amazing.
