We took a tour of Tiwanaku and found it pretty amazing. The most astounding thing was seeing the timeline showing the growth and decline of a whole culture we knew nothing about that was around before the pyramids were built. The museum shows some beautiful artefacts and the whole trip out of La Paz was well worth it to see a bit more of the country.

“could be better”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

this is a place with great historical value but sadly it was not very well managed as it should deserve. the monolithic museum, on my day of visit, was out of electricity so the guide had to show details on the Bennett Monolith with his light on his phone (and that didn't really work!). and in the other museum there were lots of display but details not much explained. (only in Spanish and our guide was in a rush in going through all stuff.. quite a pity). The ruin itself was impressive. Suggest to join some tour in smaller group so you can spend more time to really look at it in details.

“Interesting but...”

To get to tiwanaku will take you like 1-2 hours, it is worth it, but i think this place could be so much more. The ruins are impressive, but not well taken care of. The highlight is the puerto del sol. Make sure you have nice weather though..

“This is History”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

A really good opportunity to visit and learn about the centre of civilisation before the Inca's. Before visiting I had little knowledge of this civilisation, I left a lot wiser but sad to see the actual excavations have currently ceased due to Politics. A must if you are visiting La Paz and also before you start to visit the Inca ruins in Peru. Little explanations actually available in the museum or the ruins so make sure you have a good guide to provide a full explanation of the history and the exhibits,

“A fascinating archeaological site”
Reviewed January 17, 2014

I've always wished to see the Sun Gate and the Ponce Statue and I just did it on time. Very soon they will remove these important items for protection to the onsite museum, which will be less charming. There is a lot of reconstruction going on, but nobody actually knows how the place looked like. Will it be for the better?
