a meeting place for locals and for tourists, surrounded by official and historical buildings. I have never seen as many pigeons in one spot. People feed them and there is hardly a spot in the plaza that hasn't got pigeons walking or sitting on.

Excellent spot to see Bolivia's federal government building and presidential palace. Amazing church there too. Square itself is filled with fat penguins, so heads up :)

When visiting La Paz as a tourist, this is one of the must see places. Perhaps it's nothing special architecture-wise, but from a historical point of view, this is an important place. Read about the history and you'll appreciate the "Burned Palace" or "Palacio Quemado" and the other buildings that represent the powers in Bolivia (Cathedral and Parliament building)
It's also good place for people watching and a good starting point for more sightseeing. It's easy to walk downhill towards the Prado and Sagarnaga Street. Admire the colonial buildings in the side streets, like the one where the Museum for Ethnography is housed.

So, The Presidencial Palace in a very ordinary Plaza, once you are in La Paz I think it worths the visit and a couple of photos. And thats it.

This is the main square in La Paz. It's where the Government Palace is. Very nice in the afternoon. Families gather around with their kids and throw corn to the pigeons. A good place to start a walk towards the old part of town and make it till the witch market.
