“What a gem; this was a good hotel with excellent service”
Reviewed March 3, 2009

Perhaps our expectations were not particularly high regarding hotels in La Paz, but Casa Grande would have exceeded them regardless.
The rooms were comfy suites with kitchettes; spacious and clean. Breakfast was nice and the area felt relatively safe with a good choice of restaurants close by. The outstanding feature has to be the staff though as they were exceptionally friendly and couldn't do more to try to make your stay pleasant :)

Without doubt there is more oxygen at Casa Grande - situated in the attractive residential suburb of Calacota and just a few minutes taxi ride downhill from central La Paz. The overall service and attention to detail from the English speaking staff in this apartment hotel (even a little yellow duck in the bathroom!), equals any five star establishment anywhere. The cafe style dining area bright and cheerful and looks onto a busy street - breakfasts the best offered during our 5 weeks in Sth America! Can also recommend the healthy meals next door at the excellent and bustling Charlie Papas Restaurant - definitely the biggest mixed salad I've been served in my life - and a good chance to mingle with local diners. The hotel took care of our luggage during our Salar detour and also offers an airport transfer service which we used for our departure. I truly have no complaints about this hotel.

We have been travelling in South America for 4 and half months and this hotel is without a doubt a strong contender for the best we´ve experienced. The rooms, read small apartments, have a comfortable sitting area, dining table for 4 and kitchen with microwave and hob, plus flat screen TV and ipod speakers. There´s a Jacuzzi bath too. The fridge is stocked full of goodies, even the half bottles of wine are of good quality and there´s popcorn! All for $125 a night.

Service is outstanding. Alison and Emily on reception cannot do enough to ensure your stay is as good as can be and the bellguys will take your washing to a lavanderia and even go to the post office on your behalf.

The only slight drawback is that whilst there are excellent shops and restaurants in the area, the Zona Sur is definitely far removed from the authentic La Paz. The centre of the city is only 20 mins and $2 away by cab however and, for us, it was a very small price to pay.

A very nice hotel from all angles. It's located less than 5 minutes by cab from the nightlife area, directly next door is Charlie Papa's, probably the closest thing to American food you'll find in La Paz.

The staff was friendly and attentive, you rarely have to open the front door or call the elevator yourself.

The breakfast buffet is average, but the room service food (dinner menu from same restaurant) wasn't good enough to order twice. Prices in the mini bar were comparable to convenience stores.

There was a 32" LCD TV in both the living room and the bedroom. The selection of channels was large, and there was a good variety of English speaking movie channels. The bedroom had a comfortable king size bed but space around it was limited. The living room stereo had an iPod adapter.

The hotel had a small gym and a free internet computer room. WiFi signal throughout the hotel varied but was generally strong and download speeds were acceptable.

The rooms had no central heating and depending on your floor, the one radiator may not be sufficient for the entire apartment. The bathroom had its own heater that came in handy. Each apartment has its own water heater so getting a hot shower/bath is quick and there is plenty of it.

  • Liked — Two 32" LCD TVs
  • Disliked — No central heating

We spent three weeks roaming around Bolivia spending time in some of the most basic places (forget that THE most basic places) we have ever stayed in our lives, but thank heavens for Casa Grande - despite being covered in dust (and worse), we were met at the door by a liveried doorman, who relieved us of our dusty rucksacks and showed us to reception, where everything was made simple, we were served ice cold gin and tonic (real ones, not those rubbish things you get everywhere else in Bolivia) before showing us to our five star suite. The rooms are truly beautiful, wonderful baths and showers (we stayed several times and were upgraded from junior suite to a 2 bed suite) - really stunning and soooo friendly while still being professional.
Worth travelling a very long way for, but especially refreshing when you have been taking in the rest of the country, which is fantastic, but not luxurious.

Casa Grande is an absolutely superb hotel, and probably the best in the La Paz Area.

Visitors have two basic choices when visiting the city: the downtown area, which is vibrant but chaotic, noisy and very polluted; or the Calacoto area, which lacks the cultural vibrancy, but which has significantly more oxygen at 1500 feet below downtown, and which is far cleaner and quieter.

In the downtown area, the best hotels are the Europa and the Ritz. I stayed at the Europa during my last visit.

The Casa Grande is truly outstanding. The hotel contains small apartments rather than standard rooms. Service is unbelievably wonderful, the rooms are really spacious and very comfortable, and the food is excellent. High speed wireless internet is included in the price, as is a free pass to the city's best gym. There is a steam room and sauna. I paid $110 US for a two bedroom suite that surpassed my expectations.

As a business traveller who travels frequently in Andean countries, I wish every hotel was like the Casa Grande.

My daughter and I had been pre-booked into a hotel in La Paz, which we were very unhappy with. We found the Case Grande Hotel on the internet, and immediately jumped in a taxi to see it. The hotel and staff were just fantastic. They provided transport for us to get our luggage from the previous hotel; they provided us with a lap-top for our wi-fi suite; they organised and collected airline tickets for the next leg of our journey; they arranged for a masseuse to come to the suite; nothing was too much trouble for them. The suite was wonderful - fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. Room service was excellent, as was the in-house restaurant.

When my daughter returned to La Paz, the hotel sent a car to meet her at the airport, with a thermos of tea to help with the altitude sickness.

This is truly a world-class small hotel.
