The rooms are 80's decor, with old towels which should have been retired some time ago. There was dirty, intermittent water coming from taps (at times), cracked bathroom tiles and old, worn fittings. The brand new Samsung flat screens were nice, but let down by very poor cable picture quality.

The location is very central to a number of worthwhile museums and the Witches' Market, but on a back street with poor pedestrian access and few nearby shops for basic commodities (snacks/water/etc).

Service: Overall the service is friendly enough, but a little lax in places. Whilst waiting at the front desk for attention, the staff served a couple who pushed past me, rather than serving me first (and there were two staff behind the desk!). With a shirt needing ironing for a dinner appointment (no irons were available to guests), housekeeping took 45 minutes longer than promised, despite the knowledge that it was needed for an event. For these two reasons, I'll only give 2 points for service - they would have been easy wins in the context of what was otherwise fair to above average.

Facilities: There is no general store inside the hotel for basic purchases like snacks/drinks/etc, so the options are either room service or a trip outside. The cafe and waiting areas are run down, with old, stained furniture, and smoking is permitted (encouraged with ashtrays) in the foyer.

Value for money: No hot water jugs or tea/coffee were available in rooms - which for people wanting to regularly drink coca tea to help alleviate altitude sickness, meant either trips out of the hotel or room service (by contrast, most Bolivian hotels offer coca tea for guests as a courtesy). Only one small bottle of drinking water was provided per day, despite the variability in the quality of the tap water, with additional 2 liter bottles placed in rooms at 20 Bs per bottle. A cheap chocolate was placed at the bedside in the evenings.

OHS: The windows open up to about a meter and would be an easy climb from the toilet/chair and straight out (and down) for a toddler: with no locks, this is NOT a hotel for families with young children. Hot water/milk/coffee urns in the cafe/breakfast area were placed on open island in high traffic areas (just behind the egg chef) and represented a safety risk to both staff and guests (these should be placed backing onto a wall to minimize the risk of being knocked over).

By Bolivian standards, the hotel is doing OK, but overall, fails to live up to either its five stars or the Summit chain standards. I'd recommend both a review of its star rating as well as a review by Summit management of hotel conditions. There are plenty of opportunities for improvement...and many of them could be achieved fairly easily.

Room Tip: You may find that higher floors receive less noise from the street (car alarms, beeps, heavy trucks, yells, etc).

but it's a three star anywhere else. The hotel has all the amenities of a much better place, but it's long over due for a renovation. The furniture and bedding are more in line with a chain Inn. The restaurant is underwhelming, the location is off a back street, and the overall service is indifferent . The second day we were there the bar was closed because the bartender didn't show up for work, and the operator couldn't place a call to my office. All that said, relatively speaking this is a good place in LaPaz.

Our room on the twelfth floor had a great view of Mount Illiamani. Bedroom and bathroom separately thermostatted and the bathroom has underfloor heating – great! Hotel bistro very acceptable – llama burger very good. Late afternoon small pastries are delivered to the room – a very nice touch. The hotel is a long walk from the city's main attractions, but very close to a great restaurant, the Vienna.

This is supposedly one of the best hotels in La Paz and i believe it but like someone else said it doesnt "look or feel 5 stars".
This is a very impersonal hotel with very standardized rooms and breakfast and the necessary amenities to make it a 5 star but it lacks beauty, character, attention to detail, that polished look that makes good hotels unforgettable. Although it is relatively new it feels old and worn out. It's not that there's something "wrong" with it, it's just that there's nothing particularly "right" about it.
The rooms are big and comfortable, it's clean. Towels in my room were really worn out.
It's a very comfortable stay in Bolivia but don't expect greatness
Dinner at Le Gourmet was very good food and great service.

Hotel Europa feels new and clean, rooms are cozy and well lighted. Careful attention to detail and comfort was certainly what I needed after a long work day and right before my 12 hour flight home. When back in La Paz i wouldn't even consider another place. Excellent location adjacent to Prado walking area, excellent staff wen out of their way to help me get whatever I asked, including stuff they had to go outside property and get for me, like cell phone minute card.

Room Tip: ask for room with views to Illimani mountain - I got to see the moon rise above the perennial snows of Illimani - to me this is LA PAZ
