Punta del Este is filled with 1970s aging hotels with dirty carpets and bad service. Awa stands out in that crowd. It's modern and nicely designed. Nice rooms, clean, minimalist and well sound proofed. Service is good, most staff speaks English and helpful. Location is perfect - just away enough from the hustle and bustle of PDE but close enough to just walk to the beach and most restaurants. Good pool and quality breakfast buffet. There's a (slightly overpriced) spa and a (slightly overpriced) good restaurant with a lovely outside space for dinner or lunch. Overall, a good place to stay with a contemporary feel. Much needed in PDE. Careful - there is currently (Feb 2012) construction works accoss the road, making the pool area quite noisy in daytime. Kind of ruines the relaxing mood, but it should be over soon. Other than that, this is possibly the nicest hotel on the peninsula.
