Golden Beach Resort and Spa
Ranked #12 of 65 Hotels in Punta del Este
Reviewed October 18, 2010

It was great to go to Punta del Este on last October 11th, as it is a date in which people from Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil comes there to enjoy the long weekend. We choose Golden Beach for its location, but we also get impressed with the size of the rooms and hotel services, it has an excellent indoor pool, and three outdoor pools, sauna, kids club, delicious breakfast and well trained staff. More than we expected for U$S 150 per night in a special date.

I came to south america for a month and i must say that i didn´t expected much from punta del este in august as it is the lowest season, however i get really satisfied with the place and surely i´ll come back next summer to know "the other" punta del este. I stayed at Golden Beach, which really is an apart hotel, very well located at the "peninsula" as local people call the downtown of the city. The rooms are really comfortable, the one i stayed at, with a great sea view, excellent breakfast and pleasant hot water swimming pool. In the night of August 24th, there is a national party and people of all ages come out to the discotheques as they celebrate the "Nostalgy night" and oldies are played everywhere, it was fun to see couples of 50 years old with teenagers at the same place. I took a nice experience from this trip. Excellent staff at the hotel also

Stayed at this great place for 4 nights with my family: dad, step-mom, sister, brother, sister-in-law and their 2 kids (7 and 10). We booked 3 suites. The suites are very nice - have a separate bedroom and a small bar-like kitchen with mini-fridge and microwave. Some plates and utensils are included. Two of the suites had huge decks off the back and one had a small balcony. The breakfast is good for American standards but not as good as the free breakfasts included in similar hotels in Brasil. The fruit was not fresh - canned. But the croissants were very good. Since this was winter time it was nice to have the indoor swimming pool. The kids loved it. The hotel also offered free aerobics classes in their very nice gym every evening. The location could not have been better, a block from Gorlero. The staff was very nice and helpful. The housekeeping staff came by every evening to give us fresh towels and clean out the trash cans. Att the end of the day the floor seemed dirty, probably not because it wasn't cleaned, but because I think it is easy to see dirty on white tile floors. The underground garage is a bit tight, but in the winter time it was not crowded or full. Would definitely come back given the chance!

We've stayed in many hotels all over the world but never before have we had a hotel where there is a rooftop deck for each room on the top (4th) floor, wait for it, the deck has an open fire which you are allowed to use. The shop under the building sells firewood.
I have no idea how they got this past their insurers but I'm glad they did!!!
The hotel is ok, neither here nor there but this feature alone makes a 4th floor reservation worth it. We had hours on the deck, great ocean views, watched the sun set and enjoyed a few vinos by the fire before a late dinner. Great fun!
In summer this place is apparently absolutely chockers but right now in winter it is deserted...literally, like a ghost town. That aside the port was magic thanks to some seals feeding on a very old fisherman's catch. There are a few eateries open and each was nice.

We had obtained this hotel through a timeshare exchange. We knew going in that not being rated a Golden Crown that it would not meet our usual expectations. The room was in severe need of an update. There were many items that needed repair, the air conditioner was not functioning properly; hair dryer; sliding door lock, and window door lock. Refrigerator was not stocked until a few days into our trip. The Restaurant, lobby bar, and pool bar, were not open. We felt that the gym needed a major update. We didn't hang out too much in the hotel except for trying to use the internet in the lower level of the hotel. It was a place to sleep basically if you could get over the noise from the street.

We were booked into this hotel for eight nights, and stayed only one. It is way past its sell by date. The pool is chipped, and everything just looks tired and old. The room we were given was on the 3rd floor, and the carpets everywhere smell as if they need a good shampooing. Change them! It´d be much better if the floors were tiled. In the bedroom we unpacked but were unable to use the drawers as they smelled so horribly musty. We asked to be shown to another room, and they obliged. It was somewhat better, but the whole hotel just wasn´t somewhere we wanted to stay for eight nights. We checked around and found a much nicer four star, even cheaper. We got onto our travel agent and were able to move the next morning, thankfully.

On the plus side, as everyone says, the staff are very nice and we found the breakfast room pleasant too. There was lots of fresh fruit, but only one sugary cereal and no eggs of any description.

The location is excellent, but there are lots of nice hotels in the same area also, so don´t be stuck if you find yourself there.

We were sold this hotel as "boutique" and "suite" by a travel agency in Buenos Aires. We were four adults and were given a "suite", ie a normal -on the small side - master bedroom + a kitchen with two tiny single beds. The whole thing not surpassing 35 m2 (400 sq feet). Nobody cared about our cramped situation. The frontdesk staff were plentiful, but clearly not customer-oriented (we had to stand for ten minutes at check out, whilst the cleaning staff was checking that we hadn't taken anything). Being high season, the hotel was booked to the brim with Argentinian and Brazilian families, so the frontdesk staff could not be bothered, although we spoke perfect Spanish. On the other hand, the cleaning staff was efficient, friendly and available. By other posters on this forum, we know that the rooms had been recently refurbished. They had evidently been, but definitely on the cheap side: minimum cutlery, tiny closet (how would a family with two kids accommodate all their stuff? ). And all this for... US$ 225 a night, a price that even European customers wouldn't pay for in the high season in a sea side resort for this kind of room. Breakfast was OK, except for the awful coffee, and the annoying feeling that everything was made to maximise the hotel's profit: tiny plates so that you take less food and a seemingly totally continental option. I was amused to see the management state on this forum that eggs and bacon were available - this has to remain confidential it seems! In three days, we have seen any of the dozens families having breakfast with us enjoying the famous eggs. Finally, the only good point in this hotel: the location, one block away from lively, though unexceptional, calle Gorlero, the heart of this part of Punta.
