The Conrad Hotel in Punta del Este, Uruguay is AN EMBARASSMENT TO THE HILTON HOTEL CHAIN.
I stayed at the hotel from January 2-7, 2011 and to my surprise this hotel has probably one of the lowest standards I have ever seen. The hotel charged me US$ 600.00 a night for a room that was overpowered by tobacco smell. The wallpaper was ripped, giving it the look of a cheap motel. The lock on the balcony door did not work. The safe did not function (despite two requests I made at the front desk to fix it, and assurances it would). The handle of the bathroom door came off when I tried to open the door. I asked for an iron and an ironing board as this was not standard in the room. I got a cheap iron that did not warm up, and the cover of the ironing board was completely stained to the point of repulsion. Between the bathtub and the wall tiles as well as the floor tiles there was a black filling that was quite disgusting. The night table had a small (cheap) radio that did not work because it works on a 110V and there was an adapter was supplied.
To add insult to injury, the day I checked out, they tried to charge me for the consumption of chocolates, alfajores (a local pastry), and juices that I did not have.
The breakfast was good and the dining area spacious and pleasant, but the service varied from good to total indifference, depending on the person.
If the room had cost $200 I would not have made any comments, but for $600 the room should have been impeccable. At the front desk I was told that they are in the process of renovating, but they do it slowly in the winter time (their low season).
One of my colleagues got a surprise when she checked out two days later. They wanted to charge her $650 a night despite having received a confirmation of the reservation by e-mail with the price at $600 and they also tried to charge her for the consumption of items she did not touch (nice trick, someone must be pocketing the money).
This hotel has potential. However, it seems that it is managed and staffed by totally incompetents that try to profit the most by providing a service well below expectations. Shameful !!!
This is a hotel to AVOID .
