Mixed feelings about this strangely-named hotel.

The Good - I liked the location on the quiet and low-rise south end of the peninsula, but there are several good restuarants within 10-15 mins walk. Our upstairs room was spacious - a very plush kingsize bed, fancy headrest and nice pillows - the sort of bed you would expect in a 5-star or good 4-star. Large flatscreen TV with BBC/CNN a bonus as it is rare in Uruguay. Quiet air-conditioner (for heating as it was winter) The receptionist was very friendly and helpful.

The Bad - bathroom and shower - (clammy plastic curtain and blocked shower rose) was tiny and very dark - only 2 small LED lights over mirror gave a very cold white light. Same were used in bedroom except somewhat alleviated by the cute "lighthouse" bedside lamps. Very narrow staircase, difficult for luggage. Basic breakfast typical of most S.American hotels.

Price $70 out of season (in season $130-145..!!) was however good value for Punta. And 10% discount for cash.

The hotel is in a nice location, located very close to the lighthouse. The staff is fairly nice, but the rooms are not so much. The bathrooms are very small and cramped. Also there are spots of mold in the bathroom and rooms. However one thing that was quite disturbing was seeing a fairly large spider crawling by my bed. Overall, don't expect to much if you are staying here.

It's taken me a long time to review our stay at The SmallEast Hotels because I would rather not recall the experience. Yes, it's a great location and there is a nice view of the Lighthouse ... but there was mold everywhere we looked in our room! As soon as we opened the door we could smell the musty mildewy aroma that permeated everything. The room was all white which made the black mold stains on the wall and on the ceiling all the more evident, even the clammy sheets had black stains. We choose the SmallEast based on the positive reviews, and based on the low price were not expecting anything but basic accomodations. It's a shame because the staff is friendly and again, the location is great but the mold is unacceptable. I can still see the black spots when I shut my eyes and recall our room. We spent two nights and could not wait to leave even though we had paid for a third night. It was cheap but no bargain.

We stayed here for 2 nights in Feb. 2012, during Punta del Este's "carnaval" season which meant that finding a hotel room was very challenging, let alone finding a reasonably priced room. We were really fortunate that this hotel could accommodate us for 2 nights and at what was a decent rate given carnaval ($130 US/night).

The hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming, and our room was ready when we checked in. The room was pretty tiny but was nicely decorated, the bed was comfy, and the room had a safe, small fridge, and satellite TV. Our washroom really didn't fit with the rest of the room - it was really outdated, cramped and just generally unpleasant to be in (that was really the only thing I didn't like about our stay here).

The breakfast is included and was pretty good, and the hotel also has free Wi Fi throughout.

Location is also fantastic - it's about a 5-10 minute walk to restaurants, the beach, marina and shops. It's on a nice quiet street (right by the lighthouse) so it's peaceful at night despite its proximity to all the action.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay here and would return again.

Great location on the tip of Punta del Este! Walk to restaurabts, shops, port...right in front of lighthouse, "el faro."
Very comfortable and a great value. Definitely recommend and would stay there again.
