“Great place!”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

I really enjoyed my stay in this hostel! Clean & comfortable, with a nice staff! I just think that the dishes to cook food could be a little bit new, some of them were in a really bad shape!
I'd totally stay there again! =)

In between the surf- and swim beaches and 10min. walking to the bus-terminal it is located nicely to have a good time in Punta del Este. Next to the hostel is a supermarket and a cool (though expensive) place to enjoy a great cup of coffee and something extra. Our four-bed dorm had a bathroom and airconditioning which was great. Our room, like most of the rooms, was located on the first floor so we had no problem with noise.

The staff was nice and really helpful. We wanted to go somewhere downtown and the girl from the reception made an effort to find the best bus-connection for us.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, make sure you book a room on the first floor.

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 2 nights during the low-season.
The positives:
Good location, close to the bus terminal, beaches, (cheaper) restaurants, supermarket, etc.
Large common area with bar and a kitchen available.
Fireplace, which they fortunately kept going constantly - it is cold in June!
Fairly good breakfast, for a hostel.
Good wifi
Large TV with movies.
Clean room (which we had all to ourselves the second night) with ensuite-bathroom. Large storage-space beneath beds - need own lock.

Negatives:
We found this hostel on hostelworld, where the price was 190pesos pr person for 6-bed dorm. As it was low-season, we did not book this but showed up. When we asked for the price, they said it cost 350pesos pp! We told them it was 190 online, and they said that is the price only when booked online. So we had to use their computers to book with them from hostelworld, AMAZING! Had they agreed for us to pay 190 with them directly, they would have made 10% more, and we would have saved about a half hour of time. My advice: Book online...
There were hardly any other travellers there, so the staff treated the place like it was their home. They watched football-matches - taking up the whole space in the sofas, watched movies and tv-shows, played pool, etc. And when we asked them for a beer or something else, they seemed bothered to have to "work". When we watched a movie, they played loud music and did not seem to like that we turned the sound of the TV up. One evening, we wanted to watch a movie, but they were watching a program on TV - all in Spanish, and it was very loud. It was disturbing for us to sit in the common room at all, we felt more comfortable in the dorm. They took up all the space in the sofas, and did not ask if we wanted to watch something. Also they were spending ages in the kitchen cooking a meal one evening, when we wanted to do our dishes. They did not offer us any space to do this. We almost felt like we were in the way and that we were unwanted.
The kitchen was not very well equipped.
The towels are not included.
Mould in shower.
Another slight negative is that the breakfast is only until 10am. I think it should be later than this in a hostel, some people might want to sleep in.

This is a great hostel with friendly helpful staff. There's a large comunal area with good wifi and a TV. The kitchen is also large so no problem if others are cooking at the same time as you. There are a number of nice restaurants just around the corner too.

We stayed for 1 night in a double.room and we have been really impressed by the cleanness, the nice bathroom and a good bed. You find aircondition as well as even a TV in the room.

Breakfast is standard. The overall atmosphere was ok, there have definitely been a lot of people but I found it almost a bit too big and anonymous to be fair.

Room Tip: Private rooms are very recommendable

If you're 19 and are into partying and are ok with basic digs, this is the place for you. Loud, thumping music is turned on every night, sometimes till 3am, making it difficult to sleep if you're not used to Uruguayan time.

You're also expected to put on and remove your own bedding upon arrival. The person who last slept in my bed haven't bothered removing their bed linen and trash from the bed. I ended up having to do housekeeping duties for him/her while hostel stood by and watched without offering to help.

The hostel is able to organize tours for you but choices and schedules can be limited, and the reception staff, manned by a bunch of college-age kids, are not very helpful with sightseeing advice.

My biggest grouse is the Internet. El Viajero's website proudly advertises the availability of wireless Internet or wifi. This really refers to internet on the hostel's two computers (of which only offers intermittent connections), not on your mobile device. The wifi password given to me for my mobile devices did not work. I got an incorrect password message on each of the mobile devices I tried it with - staff had the gall to suggest it was my device's fault and that their password was correct. Of course when I asked to try the password on their own cellphones, it didn't work.

When paying for the hostel, please use USD. You are charged in USD and while Uruguayan pesos are accepted, the hostel uses a very poor rate. I paid the equivalent of USD10 more than I should for two nights' stay.

The pros? All rooms are air-conditioned, making it comfortable in Uruguay's baking summer heat. Each room, even the dorms, also comes with a private bathroom.

If you're able to afford slightly better accommodations, do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else. I was tempted to move to another hostel on my second night and would have if not for the fact that my bus transport used El Viajero as a base.

Stayed in an upstairs double room in December 2012. The room was nice, spacious, with aircon, cable TV and an ensuite shower and toilet, both of which were very clean.

The hostel is in a good location from where you can walk to the downtown, harbour and most of the beaches and there are plenty of restaurants and snack food outlets nearby.

The breakfast wasn't great and the hostel computers and wifi didn't work well for us. Also, the downstairs toilet behind the bar smelt REALLY bad when I used it. There was a bit too much noise in the corridor outside the rooms at night, although many hostels have much more noise than this one. It was quite expensive, but so is everywhere in Punta in the summer.
