Booked for one night via booking.com for $50US and found it to be a great choice. It's 2min walk from the bus station and both beaches and there's a great restaurant El Tonel nearby. We had no problems at all with noise, it was very clean and there was even a balcony with a sea view, flatscreen cable tv and aircon. Breakfast was basic but fine. It's dated for sure but at this price, it really doesn't na

It is well located. Downtown and very close to the beach. The staff could've been more friendly maybe... They'd never answer my Buenos Dias but could mutter a Hola! sometimes... However they were very efficient and the room was ok. Yet we arrived much earlier than check in time but since the room was ready they let us in and it was greatly welcomed by us since the weather was really bad and we wanted to rest a little.
For international travellers 8:30 am is late for breakfast so we had to leave on our last day on empty stomachs...I had a peaceful stay for the city itself was empty but I wonder how noise the hotel might be in summer...the hallways have lots of stools for people to sit and socialize so consider this before you book.

The off-season price of US$60 per night for a superior room (including refrigerator and AC) was still too much. The overall condition of the hotel is a bit shabby with its way-outdated carpet, cramped bathrooms, lack of electrical outlets, old plumbing, and poor cable quality just wasn't the most pleasant experience. However, the staff was great with most desk clerks speaking English and the WiFi was secure and very good. As it turns out, the 6 nights we were in Punta del Este, the few hotels open at this time of year were full so we really did not have the ability to change hotels. As older persons, we managed at this hotel but cannot say we would return. Younger people may not be as inconvenienced

The Shelton Hotel has seen better days but, out of season, it is cheap and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Very well located at the beginning of the main restaurant area so that accessing food was easy. The room was run-down and the bathroom was tiny, but there was lots of hot water and a heater, which was useful as it was cold at night. The hotel was quiet and we had cable TV so for $50US it was okay given that Punta is very expensive.

While the other reviews say pretty much the same thing and they are all true, I might have some other notes to mention. You might consider this a 3 star, but in truth it's less than that. For price and location it's a huge value. The rooms were clean but the bathrooms were quite run down. Tiles missing, horrible paint job, old, torn plastic shower curtain and generally very very tired. The breakfast room had shag carpeting from the past century (70's), so you can get my drift, however the staff was (young) and very helpful and happy. We were told immediately upon checking in that the Carnivale Parade would be only 1/2 block away; they told us the time and the best place to view it. (how lucky were we to happen upon this?). Uruguay in general has high standards for cleanliness and I had no reservations about cleanliness. If you're watching your pennies this will work for you.
