“Great Hotel would have liked to stay longer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2009

Located about 10 mins from the airport away from Abu Dhabi, the Shangri-La is not actually on Abu Dhabi island but it is only 15 - 20mins drive to the cornice and center of Abu Dhabi.

This is the hotel we stayed in while in Abu Dhabi for the one night. A large lobby area with a nice sized seating area and a bar off to the side and the buffet restaurant down a staircase. There was also a large Christmas tree set up in the middle of the seating area, with real presents set up underneath it, the staff said any children in the hotel on Christmas will get a gift from the tree.
The design of the hotel was very ancient Arabia, with large wooden doors in the hallways and rooms and large lamps like fire torches either side of room doors. Yet still maintaining a modern feel. The rooms were really nice, lots of space. The bathroom area isn’t separated from the bedroom but can closed off with large floor to ceiling sliding doors.
Rooms all have a 32inch flat screen TV, from which you can check your room bill and look up the per minute call charges to various countries if you want to use the phone.
As the hotel is mainly a business hotel you will find a stationary set in the desk drawer also should you need it. We were on the ground floor and the rooms had a small terrace area with tables and chairs and direct access to a medium sized pool and then the beach also. The beach is nice and is right across the creek from Abu Dhabi island with a great view of the Royal Mosque.

There are about 4 construction projects which can be seen across the creek, while some noise can be heard from the beach it is not very loud and would not cause disturbance. There is an infinity pool also which seemed very nice, slightly elevated overlooking the creek. The hotel also has its own souk, although not a real one. Just a small shopping area designed after a souk (which means no haggling of prices either) which is good from gifts and souvenir shopping. There is a spa & hair salon area and also two gyms (one male one female).

Really enjoyed the stay here even though it was only the one night. There's also a river which runs through the hotel grounds with boats that allow guest to sail up and down it, try it, it's a nice little journey.

Travelled here for some much needed winter sun and relaxation, and would happily recommend this beautiful hotel to anyone.

Our room was smart and spacious, and well stocked every day with fresh fruit, water and L'Occitane toiletries. I slept like a log in the super king sized bed. The bathroom itself was fabulous with a massive deep tub easily large enough for two, and huge walk in shower with both a power shower and monsoon shower. In the evening, when the sun had left the beach, we could laze on the warm balcony with a glass of wine, catching the last rays. Beautiful!

The beaches were white sand gently sloping into clear blue-green water. Soon as you stepped foot on the sand, a chap ran over and laid out the beach beds with towels, and at lunchtime came round taking orders for drinks and food. There was always a lifeguard in attendance. While not facing open sea, there was a rather fantastic view of the Grand Mosque on the opposite bank, whose regular calls to prayer punctuated the day.

The staff at this hotel were just amazing - always cheerful, attentive, friendly and very hardworking. The guys working at the pool bar ran a very tight ship, turning out huge plates of lunchtime 'snacks' and dealing with the beach orders. This goes for the staff in all areas of this impeccable hotel.

Of the bars / restaurants at the hotel, I only sampled the Sofra Bld, Pool Bar and Al Hanah, as the others seemed more formal and we were definitely in more relaxed mode. Breakfasts in the Sofra were a treasure trove of foods from around the world, ranging from freshly cooked full English, Continental, Japanese, Asian, American (fresh cooked pancakes and syrup). You could have fresh fruit or feast on pastries, meats ... there was an extensive choice, and mostly freshly prepared.

If you didnt fancy all this every morning you could grab a coffee a short stroll to the Souk away. The Souk also housed a couple more bars and restaurants, including the 8 Bar and Left Bank, whose food and atmosphere was fantastic.

Yes it's not cheap here, but it's Abu Dhabi, and it's a 5 star hotel, so it kind of goes with the territory.

I also just have to commend the gym at the spa with Technogym machines and Hari the friendly personal trainer.

There were very few drawbacks to this hotel, perhaps its proximity to a noisy bridge (whose noise faded to the background after a while), and they could have chucked a few more milks into the tea/coffee drawer into the room, but this is really, really splitting hairs!

In all, it was a warm, luxurious highly enjoyable break and I would return in a flash.

There are quite a number of poor reviews of this hotel which I find surprising, as my experience was totally positive.

All staff are friendly and welcoming, The rooms are spacious and of a high standard ( premier room ) The service is attentive and high ratio of staff to guests. ( the hotel was however very quiet when I stayed )

Food is good, and grounds are tastfully laid out, three well heated swimming pools and a good streach of beach, all with attendents and life guards.

The minus points are few in my eyes.
The hotel is not on the ocean front but on an inlet.
There is a military airbase close by and planes do fly quite low over the hotel during the daytime about one per hour.
The whole of Abu Dhabi is a building site so there are plenty of cranes in view.

Overall a good experience and an excellent stopover for a few days.

I cant believe we were at the same hotel.

Abu Dhabi is still finding its feet for sure but for a hotel not long open we loved tthis place.

Sprawling it maybe - the staff are still a few furlongs behind Oman and Dubai but as a city resort I thought it excellent.

Firstly seeing the locals eating and staying there said a lot - then we saw a TV celebrity -Neil Manson from The Bill (Andrew Lancel having googled him) and his family - so I thought we were in good company. (He was charming - my wife says!!)
We had a suite which was stunning - looking over the amazing mosque.

The room service, concierge were fine - sometimes excellent.

the beach was child friendly - quiet and accessible.
We mainly ate in the Sofra (buffet) - the service isnt great but freindliness makes up for inexperience - but great range of great food.

New year was pricey at over £250 a head but it was a feast - free flowing booze, oysters, caviar, -
usuallo its aboiut £35 a head which isnt bad for out here - particualy if you spend a few hours just picking.
Good breakfast too.

Dream room - sumptious hotel - with a little mall/souk attached - several pools - all warm and child friendly.

Its set beween two bridges which is unusual - but its private hotel, we felt secure, you can see buildings going uopand traffic but for us that made it different -
Key word - different, - new but excellent.
We came back - fatter, chilled, tanned (around 70 odd per day) - somewhat poorr - it aint cheap but would go back tomorrow.

After staying at the Shangri La in Oman in March 08, which was faultless, we chose to spend our Xmas and New Yr at the Shangri La Abu Dhabi........you couldnt experience two more different hotels in terms of service, Oman oustanding Abu Dhabi thoroughly incompetent!

Noneof the rooms had a list of Spa tretaments when I asked for a list it arrived 3 days later.
The staff serving around the pool spoke very poor English and struggled taking orders, on 2 occassions it took over an hour for the order to arrive.
We ordered our meal in the oppulent Bord Eau restaurant and it took over an hour for our meal to arrive......not what you expect from the best restaurant in the hotel. 2 waiters asked what wine we ordered even tho we had previously ordered, the wrong champagne was delivered....and so it goes on.
In Sofra one eve we ordered 2 bottles of wine.....they took 45mins to arrive.

The highlight however was the Concierge 'Servive'.......wanting to extend my holiday a day longer I asked if they could contact the airline and arrage this for me......after 6hrs they told me they couldnt get through. I took it into my own hands and got through to the airline in 3mins and re arranged the flights myself.....very very disappointing!!!

On New Yrs Eve we were told to assemble in the bar/foyer area where cocktails would be served....we did on time at 7pm and asked for a drink and then got told e had to obtain wristbands from the guest relations desk in order to do so......no -one had told us this earlier. Upon arriving at guest relations we queued for about 15 mins to obtain our bands.....surely it would have been easier to put the bands in our rooms in the afternoon with a covering letter?
So off we went back to the bar with our friends and their 14yr old and 19yr old daughter......we got served champagne and because teh girls were under age their parents asked for soft drinks which they wer flatlt refused. Again after complaining the girls recieved their drinks.

In all honesty it was like staying at Fawlty Towers.....a clamaity of a hotel which puts the Shangri La name to shame and we were not the only families there to think so. I will definately not be reccomending this hotel to anyone I know.

Having stayed at the Al Husn in Shangri-La's resort in Oman, we had high hopes. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, if a bit fake. It is built on a creek, so the 'beach' overlooks the new Mosque (enormous), but is constantly assaulted by the traffic on the nearby bridge.

Whilst the staff are mostly very helpful, the service is very inconsistent and therefore when you have paid for a 5-star hotel, you expect the trip to be of a certain standard and this one doesn't measure up.

For example, we hated the buffet breakfast; there were no freshly cooked items, so everything was cold. The choice was impressive, but quality was only average. The staff didn't listen when we asked for soya milk, then it was brought hot, not cold as requested and we waited over ten minutes to get a cup of coffee!

Thereafter, we order breakfast from room service - much better, but again inconsistent. First day, fantastic - brought items not requested and quality excellent; second day, okay - only the basic items provided and quality only fair; third day, better, but again a different set of items provided and quality not as good as first day.

The cost of the restaurants is also very high, as is the prices in the spa and beauty rooms. It doesn't represent value for money and you feel a little 'ripped off'.

Shangri-la again proves to be an excellent hotel choice. We stayed here for 5 days in December during the Eid celebration which meant there was no alchohol served for 24 hrs which not a problem for us. Staff not quite as attentive as in the Oman but nothing to complain about. The room was large, comfortable with a huge balcony with 2 couches either end and overlooking the pools, Sea and Mosque. Bathroom was lovely, huge tub, walk in shower and everything supplied in the bathroom. Really cute indoor boats operate from the Hotel to the Apartments and the new Souk. The Souk was a disappointment for a shopping experience and we had a disasterous meal at the Steak House but this was no fault of the hotel. If you want a cheap sightseeing option then take your seats in the hotel's complimentary shuttle which gave us a 2 hours round Abu Dhabi trip. It stops at all the shopping Malls and goes passed the Emirates Palace, we saw everything we were going to see via the Hotel chauffeur service. We had an amazing dinner at Bord Eau, I would wager that no-one can have the chocolate desert without saying Mmmm every mouthful. This was an amazing meal BUT very expensive. The Chinese and the outdoor restaurant were also excellent food but again very pricey. Basically Abu Dhabi is not the place to visit if you are on a tight budget. We swam in the smaller pool next to the beach. It was just like wading into a warm bath - lovely. The lifeguards were very attentive to any children around the pool, even reading them stories while their parents sunbathed. There were 2 beaches though both man made to looked better than they felt under foot. Huge fruit choices with each meal and the chocolate fountain with fruit kebabs was lovely. Would certainly recommend this hotel which will be the closest to the new Formula 1 circuit.
