I finally went there to take a friend who was visiting. It is a great place to see and hear about the history of Abu Dhabi. The Fort was still under restoration so was not open to the public then. I will go back to see the Fort and take future visitors there.

Visited Qasr Al Hosn during the 2014 Qasr Al Hosn festival when there was an excellent range of shows and displays about the fort's history and local cultural history and a lot of keen volunteers offering information. They had tours inside the fort itself, but indicated it would not be open during following years; restoration of the buildings is ongoing. If the festival is on, I would recommend it to all visitors, but when the festival is not on, the whole site is closed and there is little that can be seen from the outside.

This annual festival is a must see for visitors and locals. Drink the Hemlet (only available here); eat the yummies from the snack stands near the back; listen to the stories and songs from historians and see the falcons fly right over your head. This year was the first time the original fort was opened and it was amazing! The Cavalia show was a stunning spectacular too! 5-star attraction! Mark your calendars, it's only a 10-day event!

Only 10 AED for general site entry, the festival runs for about 2 weeks usually from near the end of February to early March. We went twice, the first time to an evening session that was extra but fantastic. It was the Cavalia show created by the cirque de soleil co founder. It is a real Arabian treat and is hugely popular with the locals as well as the ex pats. I won't spoil it by telling you too much but it involves horses and acrobatics on an ever changing stage. We went back in the day time to visit the main site and the actual fort. It really puts into perspective the Abu Dhabi transformation of recent times. It is a shame it is only open once a year during this time period. The other stalls were fun too and some great shows took place involving traditional dancing etc. camel riding and my favourite was getting to climb a date palm tree using the traditional method. If you are in Abu Dhabi for the next one in 2015 definitely go along to it.

The Al Hosn Festival is an excellent introduction to heritage of the UAE. Excellent displays of traditional crafts, animals (camels, falcons, horses), music, dance and culinary treats. A rare visit to the Qasr al Sarab and an arabian cirque du soleil make it an unforgettable evening. Plan your visit to Abu Dhabi for next February.
