“Wonderful hotel!”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

I have had the great pleasure of staying in the St Regis, Saadyiat twice this year. I was concerned that it wouldn't be as good the second time but, if anything, it was better. The hotel itself is superbly finished and is very tasteful. The staff are professional and very friendly. The beach and views are really amazing; it is a wonderful hotel and I can't wait to go back. There are a few improvements that could be made but they are minor: serving a light menu on the beach would be good as the lunch options are a little limited (unless you want to go to the main restaurant which I didn't). Also, a light breakfast option would be nice somewhere other than in the main dining area for those who don't want a full selection. All in all a super property!

Reviewing the The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort is a difficult challenge. Naturally, rooms here don’t come cheap, so you’d expect great service right? Exactly.

The challenge with this review is because the level of service is so stellar, it’s hard to tell whether the staff are paid so well that they’re motivated to provide great service. Or is it because they understand what it really means to give personalised service?

I’d like to believe it’s the latter. At the end of the day, no matter how well a hotel pays its staff, unless the staff really know and understand what service from the heart means, they can’t create the feeling that they are giving it their all.

From the moment one enters the hotel, there are staff there to help.

Ever felt that a hotel is understaffed? Never here. There’s always a someone to help at any time. From guiding you from the front door to the check-in to your rooms. Someone is always on hand to help.

Staff also always make it a point to see to it that all your needs are attended to. They’ll always ask if you’re settled and if there is anything else you need.

Better still, they’ll always ask if your stay has been great and if there is anything they can do to make it better. EVEN more impressive is the fact that a number of staff will also ask if there is anything else they can PERSONALLY do to make your stay even better. This is the first time I’ve ever had anyone proactively make a personal effort to make sure you have the best experience possible.

This collective personal responsibility for your experience really permeates into the every day work culture of the staff. Call anyone to help you with anything, and they take personal responsibility to make sure you get the help you need. They’ll do everything they can to make sure you get what you were looking for.

I feel it unfair to not share some personal experiences, but to highlight individual staff would diminish the service efforts of staff elsewhere in the hotel. Suffice to say, I was continually impressed by the level of service staff consistently provided. Coming from someone with years of experience in customer service consulting, that is no small comment.

Naturally the hotel was great, and the experience awesome, but what really made my stay was the service experience that the staff created.

Nonetheless, the hotel itself is grand and luxurious. From the moment you step into the hotel, it feels like one has stepped into a Sultan’s weekend cabin! The hotel is so well thought-out that it feels grand without being overwhelming. Impressive but not off-putting. Obviously a great deal of thought has gone into making it feel luxurious but not intimidating.

Everything in the hotel is well labelled. The design is more and contemporary but little flourishes keep reminding you that you’re in the Middle East. For example, sweet dates and Arabic coffee are offered in the lobby, not 4 metres from where you can pick up fragrant green tea from Singapore tea company TWG. Rooms are labelled with regular numbers, but underneath there’s a script which might be Middle-eastern (I’m no linguist, so I’m not going to speculate).

The rooms itself was spacious and comfortable. Maybe it was the structure of the building, but I felt that it would have been nicer if the rooms were a little wider rather than long. Rooms were long and spacious. However, the width was proportionally smaller, which makes it seem a little disproportionate.

The beds are nothing short of comfy. I wouldn’t rate it marshmallow-y soft, but it was a very comfortable and made for a deep and relaxing sleep. However, one point is that some beds seem a little used, one of the twin beds in my room was sinking in the middle, while the other didn’t. The hotel should definitely make regular checks on the beds.

Use of the slippers are a must in the room, the marble floors can be too cold when one first gets out of bed to use the toilet in the night.

The bathroom runs the length of the room, and is massive. Equipped with a rain shower, shower head, a snug bath tub, and a view to the outside, the bathroom feels completely luxurious!

The balcony feels a little empty and seems to suffer from “after-thought”, when one compares it to the hotel room itself. The 2 chairs in the balcony seem so lonely compared to how well furnished the room is. That said, one absolutely MUST see the view. I got a room with a beach view, and the sight of the beach stretching into the sea, and then the sea merging with the sky at the horizon is breathtaking. The room view of the clear green sea, and clear blue skies is astounding and not one you can get in our modern concrete jungles. I’ve never been one to be impressed by natural sights, but the view from the room was specular!

Another thing that was impressive was the gym at the hotel. It was very well out fitted, and comparable to a commercial gym. Pity then that it is so under-utilized. Although, I’m completely stumped as to why such a well out-fitted gym would be lacking a key piece of equipment, a squat rack, but would have a Smith machine.

Also, check out the pools in the hotel. Not just the lap pool in the gym, but also the pools outside, best place to relax. After that, one has to head to the beach to experience a tranquil afternoon that morphs into dusk as the sun-sets. Definitely some picture worth sights there.

Overall, the experience in the hotel was impressive, but there were a few things of concern. While I understand that the hotel might be a little pricey, and hence may not see many high volume nights, I happened to stay there for the 2103 Abu Dhabi F1, and the hotel was basically at full capacity for a few of those nights I stayed. When I called for laundry service, they were noticeably slower on the night they were at capacity as compared to a few nights ago when they weren’t. Furthermore, there was a loss of a small piece of laundry. Subsequent follow-ups to locate the laundry had delays and in some cases, there was no immediate follow-up/response from the hotel. It was a small thing, but from an operational standpoint, it appears that the internal systems and staff were not fully tested for full capacity operations.

Overall, I loved my stay at the resort, I could go on and on about the experience at the hotel, but one has to try it to know it. I think if one talks about seeing a mirage in the desert, I’m pretty sure they’re seeing the St Regis Saadiyat.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a beach view, the sunny and breath-taking sight really adds to the experience of...

Stayed with a group for business.

We ate in the steak restaurant and the Thai restaurant both of which we excellent.

Only really lacks a decent bar as otherwise this is a really good hotel. Some of the staff struggled with English but all wee polite and welcoming.

Stayed here for almost 3 weeks. my 3 year old loved the sand club and the beach with the amenities: bathrooms, toys, clothing etc. The housekeeping had some hickups; nonetheless, by the 3rd day all was great including the female staff that was serving the room ( for a muslim woman it is important). Moreover, due to my allergies, the housekeeping provided special gels, soaps and shampoos of my choice- this was a great touch. BIG DEAL for who is traveling with children, the pharmacy - the pharmacists are friendly and professional and i could get all the medicine without going out of the room. Stayed in the corner superior sea view room -bigger size and wonderful view. the welcoming team is wonderful and the valet guys are helpful . i did notice however that during the events the service execution slows down and some hotel guests can suffer delays due to the staff shortage.

Room Tip: chose corner sea view room in the left wing (4th and 5th floor). the right wing has smocking rooms a...

Currently stay at the St Regis at Saadiyat Island. Staff is very nice. However after checking in 2 days ago and booking reservations at the 55th steak house for indoors we were bustled outside for a table in the cool to some but cold to me evening desert weather. When we complained, we wre told the hotel had booked a party of 400 a month prior and no inside reservations were being taken. Seems like a lack of communication? The staff became very less attentive after the party for he 400 started. I've stayed at the St Regis in China and was looking to the same personal service.
They staff offered nothing but a mere apology, I had to ask for additional wraps to warm me, even after adorned my husbands jacket. Stay away from this hotel if they have a lage event. The lack of service was noted throughout the hotel, if you were not a member of the Art exhibit group.

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms near the elevator. Avoid this hotel during major conventions

I spent a night at this hotel which is located in Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. St. Regis is a relatively large hotel with a number of villas. It is also a good destination for conferences and events with several ball rooms and extensive conference facility. The hotel is also used by families for holidays. The rooms are quite spacious with very nice bathroom. A very good breakfast is served in the main restaurant. They have two pools (for adults and the family) as well as a private beach and a golf course. Abu Dhabi is developing Saadiyat Island as the cultural centre and in the next few years a number of high end museums including Louvre and Guggenheim Museums will be opened in this island. Nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Book a room facing the beach/Golf course.
