Would love to kayak more often but it's expensive for those that don't have a lot of cash. They are always busy and there is no competitive company so I guess there is no reason for them to lower their prices. Staff are super friendly and very helpful. Would recommend kayaking with these guys for sure, for a treat.

This is the kind of tour/activity that sounds good when you say it out loud "Kayaking through the mangroves in the Gulf" but when you actually do it, it is another story. From the moment you arrive it seems well organized, which it is, but there is just no flair. You put on your life jackets and get assigned a kayak. Your guide sets off and you just kayak behind him. First across some open water then up a channel. After about 35-45 min of nothing but paddling you reach some shallow water where you can see some tiny fish, some birds and if you are lucky some crabs. Then it is time to turn around and head back to shore. The whole 2 hours is entirely unremarkable. The young children we were with enjoyed it but, if you gave them a bucket of water each and said "play" they would enjoy that as well.

I am glad that we did the mangrove kayaking tour with Noukhada while in Abu Dhabi. From the very first email enquiry to the booking through to the tour the entire process was done professionally and efficiently by Noukhada.

We, group of 8 with age range from 45 to 5, booked for a private mangrove tour. The location details are clearly explained on Noukhada’s site and is on the Salam Street. After making the rest of the payment and other documentation formalities, we were assigned a leader. He was so helpful in providing the right life jacket and making sure everyone, especially the younger ones, wore it properly. After that he gave a brief talk on how to paddle and the safety measures to follow while on the water. Then he helped us to get seated on the kayaks according to our earlier booking preferences. Couple of teenagers in our group had earlier opted for single kayaks while others had the double kayaks.
The tour itself took nearly 2 hours. It was bit windy on that day and our leader made sure everyone was at ease and often helping the ones lagging behind. He took us to the inside of the mangroves and stopped at a place where he took few photos of us and explained the mangroves and the eco system around that and the threat to it. He then took us back to the open waters and then halted at another place for a 10 minutes break. Everyone had a chance to have a brief walk through the bushes and more photo opportunities for the album. Soon it was time to get back to the base.

Please make sure you wear suitable clothing for this. Your feet will definitely get wet, either at the starting point or at a break location later. Also, you may need to carefully climb down few rocks or a wooden slope at the start. It is also required to have some grip when you put your feet down in the kayak while paddling. I wouldn’t recommend slippers or flip-flops for this tour. It is likely that your clothes will also get wet. This is mainly from the paddle as you switch from one side to the other while kayaking. So wear suitable clothing. Though the leader mentioned that he had water if required it is advisable that you keep a small bottle for yourself. Sunglasses, yes but make sure they are not very costly ones, just in case you drop them in water. Sunhat is a good idea but when we did this in December we didn’t find it necessary.

Overall it was an awesome experience. Whether you had previous kayaking experience or not this is something that everyone can enjoy. It is a mix of thrill, challenge, eco-friendly, educative and of course fun. Just do it.

I went on Christmas Eve on a kayak tour of the mangroves of Abu Dhabi. It took 2 hours and the group was large, with 1 leader and 2 assistants to make sure nobody was left behind.
Booking is essential. 2 hours cost 150 Dirhams. The kayak launch site is near Salam Street (E48) near the junction with 31st and 29th streets. You are kitted with a life jacket, paddle and open kayak. The staff make sure you have the right size life jacket and you have it done up properly. After a short land introduction to paddling the group made its way down the rocks to get in the kayaks. The tour takes you round the channels in the mangrove swamps. The pace is leisurely and could be done by most people. The age of people on my tour was from about 14 to 60's. The tour took us through some narrow channels. The group stopped to learn about the birdlife, fish, crabs and of course the mangroves. We could see pink flamingoes but only in the distance. We also learned of the fragile ecology of the area and the steps being taken to protect it as the city develops.
Ideally wear a swimsuit with shorts, a shirt with a collar (to protect your neck from the sun),, take sunglasses, drinking water and a hat. I left my car keys with the Noukhada staff at the landing site and found it useful to have a towel to sit on in the car afterwards. If travelling by taxi you can keep a bag with a change of clothes if needed.
I recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in the natural environment. It makes an interesting contrast to city tours and desert trips. The company also does desert trips, longer kayak tours and mountain biking.

We've done the Mangrove Tour with Noukhada twice now, the first time a couple of years ago and most recently in November 2011. Both times were excellent. We arrived and were given a brief safety briefing and instructions before heading into our kayaks and out into the sea. The guide told us about the marine life, bird life and the impact of the construction industry on the ecology. It was all very informal as we paddled along through the beautiful mangroves.

It was a perfect trip that provided a perspective of Abu Dhabi that you never expect to see amidst the sky scrapers and racing traffic.

I really recommend it and can't believe I haven't done it more often.
