I went on Christmas Eve on a kayak tour of the mangroves of Abu Dhabi. It took 2 hours and the group was large, with 1 leader and 2 assistants to make sure nobody was left behind.
Booking is essential. 2 hours cost 150 Dirhams. The kayak launch site is near Salam Street (E48) near the junction with 31st and 29th streets. You are kitted with a life jacket, paddle and open kayak. The staff make sure you have the right size life jacket and you have it done up properly. After a short land introduction to paddling the group made its way down the rocks to get in the kayaks. The tour takes you round the channels in the mangrove swamps. The pace is leisurely and could be done by most people. The age of people on my tour was from about 14 to 60's. The tour took us through some narrow channels. The group stopped to learn about the birdlife, fish, crabs and of course the mangroves. We could see pink flamingoes but only in the distance. We also learned of the fragile ecology of the area and the steps being taken to protect it as the city develops.
Ideally wear a swimsuit with shorts, a shirt with a collar (to protect your neck from the sun),, take sunglasses, drinking water and a hat. I left my car keys with the Noukhada staff at the landing site and found it useful to have a towel to sit on in the car afterwards. If travelling by taxi you can keep a bag with a change of clothes if needed.
I recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in the natural environment. It makes an interesting contrast to city tours and desert trips. The company also does desert trips, longer kayak tours and mountain biking.
