We were really disappointed with Bait Jabri. When ordering we asked how big the appetiser portions were and the waiter made a size with his hands that showed them to be very small. So we ordered quite a few and the waiter said if it was too many we could return them. When the food arrived, the portions were much much bigger than the waiter had indicated. However, when we tried to return a dish another staff member rudely interrupted and sullenly said that we couldn't do so. When the bill came in Arabic my parter who speaks Arabic also noticed that we had been charged for the box of napkins on the table, of which we had taken one. When we paid the bill the change was not returned to us. Overall I was very disappointed as Bait Jabri is recommended in all the tourist guide books. When we told other Syrians about our experience they were very disappointed that Bait Jabri has become a tourist rip off restarant. The food isn't bad but the attitude of the staff really spoiled our evening.

Large menu and all well priced. Set in a huge, pretty courtyard. Shown as Bait Jabri in most guidebooks.

my husband and i went to bet jabri in damascus on july 2010. Based on their amazing website and the good reviews here, we were eager to experience this old damascus cafe. here are the cons and pros:
- the location is amazing, right in the middle of important touristic attractions
- the building is really old and is a view on its own
Those are the only two +ve things about it.

However, the service is really bad. people are so rude there. we walked into the cafe and we stood there for more than two minutes as the waiters kept avoiding looking at us and pretended to be busy talking to each other. Finally, one nice waiter, seated us. we called for the menu after waiting for 10 minutes unserviced. a guy walked by our table and literally threw the menu from a distance. we were grateful it didnt hit us.

so we called a waiter to take the orders, he waved his hand (as wait) rudelly and went to his friend and they started talking totally ignoring us. we looked around and they were like that with all the poor customers. finally they serviced us. they never even smiled.
before leaving, i called one of the waiters and said, 'how come your service is so bad?'. He was very agressive, took a step towards me and kept waving his hand in my face saying 'what do you mean?!! give me an example'. so i patiently gave him examples and he said ' well, this is how we are'. oh my God. we just left the place as it did spoil our holiday mood. we were in total shock because that's what we heard of syrian hospitality.
we didnt try their food but the shesha wasnt really good as smoke was coming out from every place. when we made a comment to the shesha guy he denied it but we pointed the spots to him and finally he got convinced and just attempted to fix it. my coffee was not good either- nothing special. Although this is an expensive place compared to other cafes in syria.

I would recommend to the administration of this cafe, if they are even reading these reviews and i doubt it, to either train their staff or change them. you cannot run a business on such dreadful level of customer service and such horrible food.

we changed the cafe and thought to go to narcissus palace. it was horrible. another disappointment. but that's another story.

Having been here 7 years ago, we've been to this restaurant about 3 times. We had different experiences. The restaurant is set in a wonderful place and has real atmosphere. The food is good and the listed prices are very reasonable.
The first time we went for lunch and we had a really great and friendly waiter who made us feel very welcome.
However what happened to us the second time (when we went for dinner) was that the waiter bringing the bill had crossed out the subtotals on the bill. You normally see the subtotal of the menuitems, then the 10% service tax (as indicated on the menu) and then the total price. Knowing service tax was included we did not tip initially, however the waiter made it very clear service was not included in the bill. A bit overwhelmed we gave him additional money (200 SP) intending to give him a 50SP tip. He only gave us back 100SP.
Thinking this was a one off night, we went back a week later, unfortunately being served by the same waiter as before. Same thing happened , the bill had crossed out subtotals.

This is a great place and definitely worthwile but apparantly some of the waiters take advantage of this now. Same thing happened to some people we met earlier in the week.
