Built on the site of a roman temple (columns in front of the mosque still to be seen), succeeded by a church (shrine of St. John the Baptist in the prayer hall), finally converted into a mosque. Beautiful mosaics.

“Magnificent Piece of History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

I almost cried looking at this masterpiece, hundreds of years old. and I wondered about who walked here throughout history. I also found out from a generous local shop owner, that it is in Damascus where all people, from all faiths and backgrounds, lived, worked, and married with one another. A perfect history lesson to go with this gorgeous sight.

I liked the city and it's people. I disliked the war that was going on then and still it is continuing. otherwise, it's a dream city.
