Damascus is considered to be the oldest city as well as the oldest capital of the world. I had the privelege to visit the Ol City in 2012 and as a Christian it was a truluy pelgrimage for me. Reserve ample time to explore the ancient streets within Damascus Old City.Soaking in the thousands of year atmosphere in the Umayyad Mosque , the wonderful alleyways with amazimg architecture, churches, bazaar, little shops, restaurants and even a St Paul's Bar (where I had a few Araks with an Iranian couple) was just an incredible experience.A highlight for me was having the famous Syrian ice-cream, Bakdash in an ice-cream restaurant inside the Damascus Souk that can seat nearly 700 people. The shopping inside the Souk and the narrow streets of the Old City is very unique. Perfume, carpets and art and crafts are some of the special things you can buy here. I went back to Kuwait with loads of perfume that my Syrian friend mixed for me in his shop. A short walk from the Old City you can find St Paul's Church where Paul escaped in a basket from his prosecutors. It is so sad that we have the tragic situation now in Syria and Damascus and I will strongly recommend a visit to the Old City as soon as the situation normalize!

Damascus is the most amazing old city I have ever seen. One can spend hours snapping photos and wandering through the bazaars, walking the narrow streets, visiting mosques, museums, Christian quarter to street called Straight and viewing the Roman Arch & eating. We asked locals for a good place to eat and "Grape Leaves" was suggested. The restaurant was packed and people waiting outside so we decided to wait as well. Was well worth the wait as the meal was delicious. By the time we had finished dinner it was completely dark and we had lost our bearings so headed for the nearest gate and caught a taxi back to our hotel. We ventured back to the Old city on our return to Damascus. There was a very enjoyable Swiss Garden just outside the Wall that served great Hot drinks and light lunches. The garden and cafe were a donation from the Swiss. We also heard the 'Storey Teller' in a coffee/waterpipe house in the Old City - apparently the last one alive. Was quite an experience but could not understand all, only the occasional English words used.
I visited here end of April 2011 just as the uprising had commenced.
