The souq winds through a vast area of old Damascus, and is an active shopping area not just for tourist trinkets, but to buy housewares, spices, food and a range of other domestic goods. Many areas are comprised of ancient buildings, and there seems to be something unexpected around every corner.
The merchants were friendly and helpful, while not being aggressive in their attempts to sell things to tourists. The overall atmosphere is very exotic, and it is a great place to spend a day or more just wandering and experiencing the culture.

Although this souk is still frequented by the local population it has been modernised to the extent that at time it seems as if you are in a shopping mall. There is none of the donkeys laden with goods, tiny alleys and aromas of spices in sacks, instead there are motor cars, spices in Maggi tins and few alley ways like the Aleppo souk.

Having said that this souk is still a must visit for it's Ice Cream shop, Omayyid Mosque and the very occasional now, tea shop where the locals sit smoking there Hookah pipes.
