We actually dined here twice during our 16 night holiday in Syria, once at the beginning and then again on our last night. On our first visit we ordered two mezze for starters which were both generous and delicious. They were accompanied by crudites, a very tasty dip, pickled vegetables, the chef's aubergine dish and some excellent bread. In fact we were starting to feel pretty full before we even had our main course. The main courses were the usual choices of different chicken or lamb kebabs offered throughout Syria but they were tasty and well presented. The meal was finished with a platter of fruit. On our second visit we remembered the generous portions, so my husband had a soup whilst I enjoyed the crudites etc and then we had our main course and we shared a pistacio creme brulee which was delicious. We both had a glass each of the Ksara cabernet sauvignon which we agreed was excellent. During both of our visits the service was very polite and helpful. It is not cheap by syrian standards but overall the standard of food, service and ambience made our two visits to Al Halabi our dining highlights of the trip.

I went there by the recommendation of the Lonely Planet guide, also a bit doubtful, but it was the best dinner I had in my whole trip around Syria. So I ended up dinning there while in Damascus. The was the best also, despite not all of the staff speak english they are very attentive and friendly. About the food... it was great! The best hummus I've ever tried. If I love now Syrian food I blame this place. No second thoughts, if you're in Damascus you should dine there.

We had read about Al Halabi in Lonely Planet, but we have to admit that we weren't too keen to try since it is part of the Four Seasons Hotel, and we have often found hotel food to be mediocre. NOT at Al Halabi! After having eaten at a few other top-rated restaurants in Damascus & Aleppo, we would rate Al Halabi as clearly ahead of the pack: Our appetizers and entrees were very nicely spiced with enough intrigue to make us feel adventuresome; the vegetables & salads were so, so fresh and flavorful; the dining room was done up opulently so one felt pampered; very attentive service with earnest explanations in English (there was a very large family gathering for Easter, and the staff was a bit flustered, but they were so apologetic and kept reassuring us that they had not forgotten us); and our dessert (Kunafa filled with pistachio and rose jam) was divine, especially with the luscious Arabic cream!!!
Don't worry about the "hotel" restaurant label: Al Halabi really stands on its own. Some may consider it pricey for Syria, but with the favorable currency exchange rates for the Euros & US dollars, very, very affordable for such a nice culinary experience!

For some reason, Tripadvisor doesn't have Al Halabi, in the Four Seasons, as an option for Damascus restaurants. So, I'll review it here.

This tied for the best meal we had in Syia (with the restaurant at the Mansouriya Palace in Aleppo). The service was superb -- think the difference between an Olive Garden or Red Lobster (for most of the Syrian restaurants we ate in) and Charlie Trotters or Jean Georges (for Al Halabi).

Each of our mezzes was terrific, and our main courses (I had lamb with cherry sauce) were fabulous. This might not be the most authentic "Damascus" restaurant experience, but it was a very fine restaurant experience based on International standards. And, what's more, not counting our bottle of wine, the three of us ate for around $60.

I'd strongly recommend Al Halabi.
