Treat with caution some of the glowing reviews you read about Hanania... it's one of the reasons we chose the hotel only to be sorely disappointed. Yes, the location is great, but that sadly, is about it! The breakfast is more a token offering or bread and coffee, leaving you most unsatisfied, the rooms have be sloppily put together with the random tchotchkes but that is not the worst part. The bathrooms are very small and beware of the sewage smells that penetrate every nook and cranny in the room, reminding you every morning what all of Damascus' old town is busy doing.

Not worth your hard earned dollar! Avoid if you are expecting a four-star property.

We stayed at the Hanania for 3 nights to have easy access to Old Damascus. The hotel it's a very good place to stay if you want to be in the Heart of Historical places and feel the atmosphere of centuries as well as inside of the hotel. There are several Syrian artists paintings in the rooms that are very nice available for sell. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It's only about a 3 minutes walk to the St. Paul Church and 15minutes to Umayyad Mosque to the main entrance. The hotel is kept up well and very clean. Overall, a very positive experience and highly recommended if you will be staying overnight for the sunrise tour.

The hotel is located in the christian quarter of Damascus in a quiet alley. Since everything in the old city is in walking distance this is a good starting point for exploring the city.
The staff was friendly. The room the children stayed in was spacious, our room was smaller, but still comfortable.
Hotel prices in Damascus are rather high (compared to the rest of Syria), but the price quality of the hotel is OK.
Negative point: The room my wife and I stayed in had a boyler on top which kept on making noise al through the night, so I had to sleep with ear plugs (the noise however dit not bother my wife).

Alleys in the old city are a litle drab so the entrance to the hotel doesn't do it justice. It's a small hotel with a great atmosphere and amazingly helpful staff. We arrived at around 2:00am with a problem with our hire car (another story). The staff came out and assisted us to fix it before settling us in to the hotel.

Everything about the hotel was great. Special thanks to manager Aboot (phon) for his generosity in recommending things and even taking out time to give us a lift to the new town.

Stayed in the Romantic Suite for a week around Christmas 2009. Great for couples. Excellent customer service and very attentive and professional staff. They speak great English. Breakfast was the best I've ever had at a hotel and included in the room rate - fresh pita bread, hummus, yogurt, 3 different cheeses, tomato and cucumber slices, boiled eggs, cereal, juices, tea, coffee, and fresh fruit.

Hotel is in the Old City and is tucked away in a very quiet corner. Extremely safe, as there is a stone wall enclosing the hotel and a cool big door like in Hobbiton that is always locked so a staffer has to let you in from the inside to enter the hotel. It is a retrofitted art museum so it's uniquely set up. Location is unbeatable as every taxi knows Bab Sharqi, even drivers from other countries (if coming from Beirut). Staff from the hotel met me at Bab Sharqi and walked me to the hotel.

Bargain hard if booking in advance. Hotel was new when we were there a year ago so we had the whole place to ourselves and a private breakfast cave that used to be a wine cellar. Rooms were so cool, with a stone Romanesque bathroom shower looking out onto the bedroom, heated floors, and Singer sewing machines converted into cute little tables. Loved this place and extended our stay cause we enjoyed it so much.

Only neutral comment is staff didn't know much about the local bus routes, schedules, and system so if you are backpacking and plan to take local transport, figure it out for yourself.

Our visit to the Hanania could not have been bettered. Our hosts treated us more like house guests than customers making us feel incredibly welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel is relaxed, interestingly decorated and really well located.

This was the 'luxurious' part of our trip to Syria, the part where we wanted to spoil ourselves a little...and it was gorgeous, our room was very well done, if a little small, but the hotel itself, half of an original Damascene House, was very beautifully restored. The owner clearly has a love of art, making it a lovely calm peaceful place to come back to after the craziness of the souks...the staff were very accommodating and keen to help and advise...all in all a beautiful place to stay...
