Alleys in the old city are a litle drab so the entrance to the hotel doesn't do it justice. It's a small hotel with a great atmosphere and amazingly helpful staff. We arrived at around 2:00am with a problem with our hire car (another story). The staff came out and assisted us to fix it before settling us in to the hotel.

Everything about the hotel was great. Special thanks to manager Aboot (phon) for his generosity in recommending things and even taking out time to give us a lift to the new town.

Stayed in the Romantic Suite for a week around Christmas 2009. Great for couples. Excellent customer service and very attentive and professional staff. They speak great English. Breakfast was the best I've ever had at a hotel and included in the room rate - fresh pita bread, hummus, yogurt, 3 different cheeses, tomato and cucumber slices, boiled eggs, cereal, juices, tea, coffee, and fresh fruit.

Hotel is in the Old City and is tucked away in a very quiet corner. Extremely safe, as there is a stone wall enclosing the hotel and a cool big door like in Hobbiton that is always locked so a staffer has to let you in from the inside to enter the hotel. It is a retrofitted art museum so it's uniquely set up. Location is unbeatable as every taxi knows Bab Sharqi, even drivers from other countries (if coming from Beirut). Staff from the hotel met me at Bab Sharqi and walked me to the hotel.

Bargain hard if booking in advance. Hotel was new when we were there a year ago so we had the whole place to ourselves and a private breakfast cave that used to be a wine cellar. Rooms were so cool, with a stone Romanesque bathroom shower looking out onto the bedroom, heated floors, and Singer sewing machines converted into cute little tables. Loved this place and extended our stay cause we enjoyed it so much.

Only neutral comment is staff didn't know much about the local bus routes, schedules, and system so if you are backpacking and plan to take local transport, figure it out for yourself.

Our visit to the Hanania could not have been bettered. Our hosts treated us more like house guests than customers making us feel incredibly welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel is relaxed, interestingly decorated and really well located.

This was the 'luxurious' part of our trip to Syria, the part where we wanted to spoil ourselves a little...and it was gorgeous, our room was very well done, if a little small, but the hotel itself, half of an original Damascene House, was very beautifully restored. The owner clearly has a love of art, making it a lovely calm peaceful place to come back to after the craziness of the souks...the staff were very accommodating and keen to help and advise...all in all a beautiful place to stay...

This boutique Gallery hotel is a gem hidden in the Christian part of the old City. At walking distance to All main old City attractions and just next to one of the major gate Bab Sharqi, the hotel is very quiet.
We stayed as a couple for two nights in one of the top room, with a terrasse and little view overlooking the cityroofs.
Breakfast is simple but delicious.
The greatest asset of the hotel is the most friendly and always helpfull staff. We would book taxis for you and translate into Arabic your destination to help with non english speaking drivers picked from the street.
We would definitively come back to Hanania hotel whenever in Damascus.

The young men on the hotel reception/night staff were never less than helpful and charming. The owner's nephew speaks excellent English. Other staff speak Spanish. Where we didn't speak the same language the service was always courteous. We booked cars/drivers through the hotel. The rates were good and the driver very helpful with excellent English as well. The hotel is a quirky restoration of an old house in the Christian quarter. Each room is differently furnished. Beds are comfortable, aircon works, breakfast is fine if slightly simple. Wi-fi is free and the signal is good. We stayed in two rooms - Romantic, and Scales and Fine Art. Both lovely although the bathroom in the Romantic suite is a wet room so don't stay in this room if you're unsteady on your feet. I loved the Scales and Fine Art room on the top floor. The ground floor rooms give onto the courtyard so you will hear returning and breakfasting guests. Some rooms overlook the street. The interior rooms on the upper floors are quietest. If you're travelling to Damascus for the first time the location of the hotel is ideal. Incredibly easy to find, first right off Straight Street once you enter through Bab Sharqi gate and then left where you see the sign. It's in the Christian quarter of the old city where you're more likely to find bars/restaurants that serve alcohol and there are a number of good places nearby. The old city is completely safe to walk around in so lose the guidebook and just wander. People here are incredibly hospitable and fair-minded to tourists.

The Hanania is located in the northeast quadrant of Old Damascus (the Christian Quarter), in a cul de sac alley off Hanania Street. Hanania Street is a mostly-pedestrian street that runs north from the eastern end of Straight Street adjacent to Bab Sharqi (the historic Eastern gate to Old Damascus). If you arrive in the wee hours of the morning, as I did, your taxi will drop you outside Bab Sharqi gate. Go through the ancient Roman triple arch, take the first right, and walk almost all the way to Anania Church to find the alley to the hotel on the left. The darkness may be a bit daunting, but the route is safe at all hours.

The hotel setting is very quiet--no street noise intrudes from the busy highway outside the walls. The hotel has 9 rooms which range in size from tiny to 2-room suite. All are clean and simply furnished, and all open to an inner courtyard that displays numerous paintings and sculptures. The staff speak English well; the front office is staffed around the clock. I stayed for two weeks (and my wife, traveling for business, for a full month). We found the staff to be courteous, friendly, and helpful at all times. From the Hanania, it is easy to walk to---and get delightfully lost in --- all parts of Old Damascus. The Hanania is not a fancy luxury hotel, but it is clean, safe, and comfortable. My wife, who is by no means an adventure traveler, was comfortable to stay there alone after I departed.
We have no reservations about giving the Hanania a strong recommendation.
