We stayed for 3 nights at the Orient Gate, in terms of location, it is about a 10-15 min walk to the Old Town. The hotel itself is in an alleyway and has not been updated since the 1970's perhaps. The rooms are very basic but clean. We paid about $65US per night which was more than the price advertised on a sign at the hotel (around $45 I think) so I'm sure there could be some negotiation with management. There is a restaurant but we did not eat there. There is a mosque nearby which woke us each morning at 5:30 am and blasted us with noise for 20 mins or so. The hotel itself is also not very quiet. The room was never made up during the day while we were out sightseeing. The staff have limited English skills and it was often difficult for some members to understand our requests and obtain directions, even for something as simple as a restaurant recommendation. We would very strongly recommend against having the hotel arrange any transport. We needed to arrange a driver from Damascus to the Dead Sea in Jordan, the man that the hotel arranged showed up in an old model taxi, did not speak a word of English (although we asked for an English speaking driver) and then once we had crossed the border into Jordan, called someone who did speak ENglish and had them tell us that we would be dropped off in Amman as his car was "not allowed" to go to the Dead SEa, which was absolute rubbish. Of course, this was not the arrangement and we were quite upset. We tried calling the hotel and they were unable to help us as the woman who answered the phone could not speak English well enough to understand the problem. When we put the driver on to speak with her, he screamed at her as well as two other Arabic speakers we called to try to get sorted out. The driver ended up dropping us off on the side of the highway and had arranged for another man to take us to the Dead Sea. The new driver was an absolute maniac to put it lightly, drove like a crazy person through the extremely thick fog and it seemed like he had serious mental problems (he alternated between laughing and shouting to himself throughout the trip). We did eventually reach the Dead Sea but it was a pretty terrifying experience. Long story short, give this place a miss. The management should seriously reconsider their transport providers as our drivers were unbelievably horrible people.

Reasonable accommodation, clean with hot water. We paid S£2200 per night, might have been able to negotiate a better out of season rate. Staff helpful with some English. Normal Syrian breakfast. Plus points - located in central area (along with many other budget hotels), good view of Jebel Qassioun from breakfast room. Minus points - 3rd floor, access via stairs difficult and I wouldn't want to think about what you would do if there were a fire. Our room backed onto the small road at the back which is very quiet most of the time, including at night, but becomes an uninterrupted horn symphony in evening rush hour, about 7-8 p.m. No nice courtyard or character, but a reasonable base to lay down your head for a short stay.

Good and clean hotel in Souk Saroujah. 5-10 min walk to the Old City, the hotel keeps all features of a mid-class hotel. Very friendly personel, quite silent rooms, though the hotel is in the centre of life. Room reservation available via internet.

The Orient Gate is a basic but clean hotel occupying the 3rd floor of a scruffy building right in the centre of town. The location reminded me of Kowloon, lots of DVD/Mobile phone shops , alleyways and bustle, but as everywhere in Damascus, feels safe. It is nicely placed for an easy walk to the Old Town and also surrounded by banks, western style coffee shops and internet places . The young guys running the desk speak good english and couldn't have been more helpful.. I arrived and left during the small hours and the reception was always manned and there to assist. They can advise on trips and transport too. Breakfast was a boiled egg, olives, bread and jam, on the roof terrace, and fresh towels are put on the end of your bed every day.
