“EMBARRASSMENT TO DOHA”
Reviewed November 29, 2012

As the title says. The tourism authorities would be well-placed to come and inspect this property. Perhaps more importantly, I would suggest that the Ministry of Health needs to get down there fast. There must be a reason why there is a strong smell of industrial strength bleach everywhere - really sickly. I turned off the air conditioning which seemed to clear it somewhat but the common areas (particularly around the lifts) are horrendous.

The two hour wait to check in was ridiculous, bearing in mind it was not a peak time. It did allow me to observe numerous residents lodging their complaints with reception - sometimes rather vocally. The staff are very poor - to the point where they shout. when checking in the Phillapino ladies continued to chat to each other in their native language - really rude.

Was taken to my executive studio room which looked fine then the bell boy got a call to take me to another which was only a bed - not what i paid for. More wait. Eventually got a one bedroom apartment. not ideal.

When I complained about smell of bleach, they came round and spared the apartment with a canistor of air freshner - nice.

I concur which most other reviews - this place really is atrocious.

Thoroughly deserves its bad reviews. Shoddily built, badly maintained and indifferently managed. Looks good from a distance and the sad staff try but have any initiative beaten out of them by a management bent on ripping off the public. Arrival at Tower 1 at 10.30 pm was met with empty reception there and a long trek (this is a BIG hotel) through the dingy mausoleum like corridors with their energy saving lights flickering into life accentuating the shabby ceilings and floors. Grubby. "Artwork" on the walls was interesting mainly due to the low quality and the random placement of the tacky pictures. Check in was dealt with indifferently and the helpful porter guided me back through the car park as a shortcut. Passing their stockpile of mattresses stored in teh car park made me wonder what it was going to be like. Rooms are adequate. No bottle of water waiting for you. Order from room service and then get a rip off currency exchange. K Mart Shop in the complex on the terrace at level 4 is awful and very pricey. Avoid. Restaurants looked average - I tried a couple and looks were not deceiving - they were average. A visit to the bathroom at the lobby on T1 was met with a broken urinal, with the other having tissue wrapped around the flush valve and the door handle out broken. The sense of relief after using the facility wasn't so much that of having emptied your bladder but rather of not catching some disease. Lifts in T4 are in two banks of 3 with one bank serving the "odd" floors and the other "even" floors. Saves money in construction as they only have half the number of lift lobby doors. Lifts are slow. Location of the Hotel is OK. Management need to be sued for misleading the public if you can bear toi watch their promotional video on the TV. No kettle in th e room. Request for same was met with a polite "no". No soap in the room: " we ran out".

Room Tip: don't stay here

Just horrid - everything from the disgustingly dirty floor mats in the lifts to the bath that floods everytime you use it to the phones that connect all rooms and not just yours and the dirty swimming pool. stay away!

Dont stay here if you can help it.

Unfortunately there are a number of people that come from a Airline in this country that dont provide housing or dont provide enough money for housing and end up in this excuse for a hotel.

* sewer problems.
if you walk into your bathroom and feel the need to vomit. Thats normal for most rooms here. Your pies have not been cleaned and the gas from the sewer has mad its way to your room. dont bother asking about cleaning it. they dont know. If its really bad ask to change rooms.

* bad fixtures/tiles.
Pool tiles are falling off and the pool is blocked off and 1/2 available. its sharp and possibly could infect you if you cut yourself on them.
Tiles generally are either cracked or falling off. Very bad.
Patch jobs everywhere. No real quality to be found in any room/foyer/outdoor area.

* Staff
Can be plesant but most just dont want to lose their job. So they just do what they can with what little they are given.
Managers are ok; but most are incompetant.
The latest stupidity they are trying to pull over peoples eyes is NOT providing toilet paper, even though it was not advised in the contract etc. When asked about this, they send their messenger boy (indian or asian) and they take the heat for the idiot lying incompetant managers.

The sales lady is a complete liar. She will show the good rooms to you and place you in the bad rooms. Do not acccept the room as they willo make it very difficult to change.

Curtains in some towers are very thin and the sun rises here at about 5am.
Aircon in some rooms barely works and will probably make you sick as I dont think they clean the filters apart from when you ask for the room filter to be cleaned.

If your a light sleeper...... beware.
Rooms are noisy, either from the pipe rooms below on certain floors; or the paper thin walls separating the rooms.

If your here for a month it will cost you 5000 - 7500 Riyals. NOT worth it for what they dish out.

STAY AWAY FROM HERE. IT IS THE WORST HOTEL IN DOHA. But it will cost you your sanity to stay here.

Room Tip: Dont come here. But if you really want to experience what Qatar is like with the idiodic slave labou...

There is, it seems, a litany of poor reviews for this hotel. It is, undeniably, a long way from the Carlton Ritz in its standard, which can best be described as rudimentary. The rooms, it seems, receive only a cursory clean, there is a strange sulphorous smell in the lobby and there's a lot of equipment which is poorly maintained. Previous reviews are accurate in this regard. However, it is not without its plus points.

Firstly, the services. there is a large outdoor pool. I didn't use it, but it's definitely there. There is a sauna and gym, which has a lot of treadmills, and some cross-trainers, spinners and weights but, strangely, no rowing machines. These are not as well maintained as they should be, but I've had problems getting on a machine even at busy times. There is a supermarket with a limited range of food, but enough to at least survive on and provide a little variety. There's also restaurants, but I've not visited these at all. The apartments themselves are pretty spacious, somewhat unnecessarily equipped with two en-suites even though there's only one bedroom. The internet is erratic but seems to work - but is wired rather than wireless. There is a 32@ flat screen TV with the usual array of TV channels - about 40 in all, many of dubious quality (but you can't blame the hotel for that).

Secondly, there's the service. I have to say, previous reviewers' experiences were not repeated for me. When I first switched on the cooker, it blew up. I phoned Reception, and someone came within 15 minutes and dragged the cooker away. Within another 30 minutes it had been repaired and reinstalled. I also phoned for an iron and ironing board. I had to phone twice, but it did arrive and the iron was actually brand new. And if the staff are generally rude, they haven't been to me (or perhaps I've just not noticed).

Thirdly, there's the price. Those looking for holiday accommodation should probably give this place a miss. However, at less than 10,000 QAR a month for a long stay in a central Doha location with the facilities available - dubious though the condition of some of these are - it must rank amongst the cheapest of it's ilk.

For a business traveller looking for a central location and a long-term stay (one month or more), the hotel is perfectly acceptable - particularly if you use the pool and/or gym and aren't particularly adventurous.

Room Tip: Tower 4 is the newest. Try to get out to buy food from elsewhere if you're going to cook for you...
