At the beginning of a trip around the Middle East we stayed for three nights at the Mövenpick Doha. I contacted the hotel in advance to reserve an airport pickup through e-mail and got a reply with a decent price. Upon arrival in Doha we noticed our names on a screen in the arrivals hall and was immediately escorted by our driver to a shiny new Lexus that took us to the hotel. Very convenient as we were arriving late. Check in was a breeze and we got upgraded to a larger room with views over Doha Bay and the skyline.
The room itself was very nice. A very comfortable bed, a Samsung flatscreen tv with 40 channels, free wifi, bathroom with tub and spacious enough for the two of us. They also provided two bottles of free water each day. Location-wise the hotel is situatied conveniently for the airport, the fantastic (free admittance) Museum of Islamic Art (10 mins' walk, partly through a construction site during our visit) and Souq Waqif which are two of the sights in Doha. Doha is not a great city to walk in, but we managed. You also reach the Corniche in about 5 minutes walk from the Mövenpick along which you can walk all the way to Doha's West Bay (where all the scyscrapers are), but that is about 6-7 kilometers one way.
We had breakfast included in our rate and thought it was okay. Nothing special but alright with a few Indian, Arabic and western dishes provided. They also had an egg chef. Plus for the tasty freshly squeezed orange juice. One night we tried the restaurant in the hotel which I found quite boring. Nearly no one there and prices were very high. We tried the Lebanese mixed grill and while okay taste-wise it just wasn't worth the hefty price tag. The bar is not very exciting either with steep prices even for a draft beer, but I guess that might be the situation in all of Qatar.
The pool area is okay with a swimming pool and a jacuzzi. It's not the prettiest place though and there was a quite limited amount of sun loungers, even though we got one everytime we went to the pool. Staff at the hotel were friendly enough, and one of my favourite things about the hotel was the turn down service where they left you a small bar of Toblerone chocolate on your pillow. Nice touch.
To summarize: nice modern hotel, liked the free wifi, the room. Not so impressed by pool area, food and public areas.
