probably my worst hotel experience took place in this upscale and very pricey place. just an hour before i was due to catch my flight and was hurriedly packing my stuff i noticed my wallet missing from my luggage (which was still inside the closet, and which i had not touched since i left the room that morning). was absolutely sure i left it there (as i only bring my passport and some local currency when leaving the room). after searching every inch of the place and didn't find it, called hotel reception who sent the hotel police to 'investigate', nothing turned up. had to rush to get to the airport, but first filed a missing valuable report with their administration, who was at least very apologetic and promised to cooperate and inform me if something turns up. two weeks later, i receive a call from my embassy saying the hotel had 'retrieved' my wallet and sent their apologies, everything seemed to be intact (checked against details i left in the report), and that the embassy was sending it back to me. they didn't bother to send any explanation (where they 'recovered' it and when).
(1) never forget to place valuables inside the safety box (even if u will be gone only for a very short while)
(2) the price for an expensive hotel room apparently does not always cover safety and security, even if it's a Sheraton
