Having booked a stay at the Doha Sheraton, we were quite concerned to read two negative reports about the hotel on Tripadviser and considered changing our plans. Fortunately, just before doing that, a positive report was published and we left things as they were.....and we're so glad that we did.
Although the hotel is one of the older ones in the area, it had a wealth of good things going for it. The design and structure were interesting, very colourful, with plenty of lifts/elevators providing instant scenes through the glass whenever we used them. Although there were many guests, the hotel was quiet, with little disturbance or noise.
Despite arriving at 2.00am after a delayed flight, the staff were welcoming and so ready to make us comfortable as quickly as possible. Throughout our stay, we found this attitude prevailed. All our questions or requests were answered in full, staff in all areas, at all times, endeavouring to be as helpful as possible, always with ready smiles.
The no-smoking room we'd requested was waiting for us, clean, comfortable, spacious and with a splendid view across the Corniche. Our stay was enhanced by watching the comings and goings from our window, especially at night, when the lights around the Corniche made it seem like a fairyland! All facilities in the room, toiletries etc were first class.
The food was very good, the breakfast buffet always had an excellent selection available and the Friday Brunch was superb.
We enjoyed walking around the gardens and on the beach, with lots to see, including a small, well-kept aviary.
If I had one criticism, it would be that the pool was rather 'tired' and ready for a refurbishment. Tiles had fallen off in places and there were some cracks around the sides. Unfortunately, as the jelly-fish had arrived earlier than usual and the nets had not been put in place, this restricted the opportunity to swim in the sea, which was disappointing, however there were always plenty of sun loungers available to use in sun or shade.
We're so pleased we used the Sheraton for our visit to Doha.

The Sheraton used to be an iconic hotel in the Gulf - its shape as a pyramid set it apart from its peers, but that is no longer a reason to choose it in Doha.
I stayed for five night and wasn't overly impressed by the overall package.

The plus points:
- the dual level rooms were nice - it gave the feeling of being in a suite, with a separate area to watch tv/work/eat etc.
- the hotel is set in considerable grounds and the main benefit of this is the small beach and bay to swim in.
- if you collect points, SPG points are worth getting.

The minus points
- overall service is so-so; certainly not great. for instance, i requested a large double bed on my reservation but was allocated a twin room. Reception staff suggested I call them later that day to see if any were available. Shouldn't they be calling me??
- Food is nothing to write home about and is on a par with any other 5* hotel
- Bathroom amenities could have been better quality given the hotel - most hotels of this category would provide some sort of branded items.
- Sheraton charges a fortune for using the net. When are they going to include it in the room rate!?

Incidentally, the restaurant at the top of the hotel is highly regarded in Doha, but on the night I went it was largely deserted and the food, although very good, was very expensive.

- how did I get there ? upon recommendation of a local friend

- location: great spot in the modern part of Doha (right across the street from the Four Seasons) with own nice private beach

- lobby & facilities: plenty of space, super clean, nice furniture, plenty of services available on site (cafés, restaurants, shops, business centre, pub, bank, etc) and a very nice traditional arabian tent where you can just chill out and drink coffee

- room: large, top notch, modern (2 flat screens in mine), nothing to complain about and fantastic sea view ... by the way, you don't need to bring any electric adapters as there is one for each world region ! large bathroom with tub & shower ...

- food: breakfast is just great and has all you can expect for the category, even ethnic corners in case you want to have a miso soup to start the day ...

- service: discret and polite ... what else would you expect ?

- pool & beach: can't understand the person who said the beach was dirty ! staff actually comes by frequently to make sure the single piece of paper is removed ... and the whole thing is well maintained and not old at all

All in all, very nice and convenient place. Old town is 5 minutes away by taxi (max 10 QAR) but you can also use the hotel's limo service (all Jaguars XJ but count 4 to 5 times more than the taxi).

Maybe a bit expensive (got a B&B corporate rate of 1,100 QAR a night + 17% tax) but worth the money ...

Very old inside, in desperate need of renovation. Trades as 5 star but 2.5* is more realistic.
There's a decent Irish bar in the basement and a very tired bar/club upstairs. I've never ever seen so many prostitutes in one place. All Filipino, and very much in your face looking for business.

Not at all pleasant. Oh, and you have to go through airport-style security before you enter. Why?...
