“Just what I needed”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

I was booked for one night at the Mercure Grand Hotel in Doha but my flight arrived at 3.30am on the day of my booking. I took a taxi from the airport to the hotel hoping to leave my bags and then check in later, but instead the incredibly helpful receptionist made my room available immediately at no extra charge - effectively giving me a second (part) night at the hotel for free. My room was on the non-smoking floor and was clean and spacious and equipped with very welcome air conditioning. There was also free wifi which was very useful. During my stay I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner in La Brasserie restaurant at the hotel; each meal was a buffet and was excellent and fairly-priced. I also used the open-air swimming pool which was perfect for cooling off at the end of the day. The city-centre location of the hotel meant that I could walk for 10-15 minutes to the Souq Waqif and the Corniche and the hotel was able to arrange a taxi when I wanted to go further afield. The hotel also provided a complimentary minibus shuttle to the airport (they run one an hour) for my departure. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly. It is true that there is a lot of construction going on near the hotel, but that is true of Doha as a whole and I did not find it particularly disturbing (my room was at the back and so did not overlook the large Musherib Project building site). All in all I would fully recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for the non-smoking floor and a room at the back (not overlooking the Musherib Project construct...

I stayed here for 1 day & 1 night in July 2013.

The hotel entrance is quite nice.
The staff were pleasant and helpful.

The room was the main disappointment: It had an unpleasant odour of stale cigarette smoke & mould, this was apparent as soon as the door swung open. (6th floor 626)
The room was VERY worn & old looking. The TV looked like it was from the 1980's. The wall sockets did not work correctly & lighting was dim. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable... although it had some human hairs on it that I noticed as soon as I entered the room.

The food on the lower ground restaurant is a buffet - It was average at best. No atmosphere in any way, large dining room with no one in it but me, the food was ok, sitting there for hours on hot plates. Not particularly appealing.

I did not use it as I was only there for 24 hours but the pool looked very nice.

All in all the hotel is ok / average for a few nights stay only in my opinion.

Final thought - All round the hotel is building work going on, views were terrible from the windows. JULY 2013

Room Tip: Make sure to get a NO-SMOKING room

Thank you for your response,
Yes the period is a little quiet as it is Ramadan Time.
I will have a look on the cleaning of that room with our team.
The renovation of the room is under process. By end of September we may have at least one floor finish.
I hope to see you again.

Very friendly and helpful staff made my stay at the Mercure Grand Doha very enjoyable. I especially thought the transportation offered by the hotel, to/from Airport and local tourist sites, was very reasonably priced and the drivers very knowledgeable.

Booking a company negotiated rate room in a Mercure hotel (not Novotel, not Sofitel) next to a massive construction site, I did not have any specific expectation nor did I intend to write a review. Yes the hotel is in need of a massive renovation plan but that would be stating the obvious. What I found not acceptable however are a few 'details' that are to be blamed on poor supervision, not aging rooms.
- Shower head almost totally blocked (by dirt/sand?) and screw thread damaged beyond repair by previous attempts to force it into place. Result: I had to totally remove the shower head and hold the hose to shower.
- Toilet seat loose and not properly screwed into its fittings. Safer not to use it at all
- Hair dryer: dangerous to use. It instantly made a sharp noise of a broken fan and became red hot, too hot to touch after a few minutes of use while all the inside wires were incandescent. That thing is a real danger in any bathroom.
All of the above surely should be spotted by any housekeeping staff cleaning or checking rooms after each check out, and reporting to the engineering department. It just shows a lack of or a poor control / reporting policy.
I found the staff generally courteous (Maria at the reception is to be commended for her ability to stay professional despite the presence of a 'supervisor' on her back, giving her unecessary orders and counter orders, creating more confusion than needed). The 'concierge' by the entrance seemed either lost or confused or new in Doha, but totally unable to multitask.
You can spend millions into renovations but you must make sure you have an efficient housekeeping supervision team.

Dear Michael,

Sorry for that situation with the housekeeping team, I will check what happen exactly and take necessary actions to avoid that kind of negligence.
Corrective action plan will be made; you are right saying that it is not only with renovation that we will satisfy our customers but also on our daily work.

I miss my crucial point on control, and now that all the process of the renovation is on the way, I will surly make more control on the room service of the Housekeeping Departement.

I come to Mercure Grand Hotel Doha since 4 years on row. I am happy with the service, they will endeavor all efforts so your stay is enjoyable from the moment they pick you up at Airport till they bring you back again to it!
However works are in the vicinity (yes Doha is changing) but I didn't feel any inconvenience with noise, disturbance or poor insulation.
Staff are friendly and welcome and the hotel is in a walkable distance from Doha Corniche, Handcraft Market (Souq Waqef) and the Museum of Islamic Art

Room Tip: take opposite side of the works (however you will loose the sight but you are 5 minutes walking from...

was staying for three nights, ok, the construction site across the street was expected, but the Hotel's windows are far from acceptable. Insulation against heat and noise was zero - hope they have them replaced by double glazed uPVC windows in the future!
bathroom needs restoration, definitely!
