For those who are familiar with the Arabian Gulf region, Doha is one hour away from Dubai. Souq Waqif is one of the top tourist destinations in Doha. My friends in Qatar decided to show me around and all of them seemed to agree on Souq Waqif.

Peronally speaking, and after walking around this place, had coffee with the boys, I advised my friends to visit Dubai and more specifically Madinat Jumeirah. Both are the same concept, but the later is breathtaking if not mindblowing.

I personally suggest you visit Souq Waqif if you were in Doha, as long as you do not compare it with Dubai's Madinat Jumeirah!

This is probably Doha's biggest asset, and certainly the place visitors are most impressed with. All too often cities in the middle east have lost their traditional souks due to the pressure to shop in Malls or from damaging fires. Souk Waqif holds onto the traditional feeling of the souk, and the cafes and restaurants are bustling in the evenings. As a tourist you'll get to mingle with local people, and pick up some traditional crafts. Well worth a visit.

Just steer clear of the pet souk area. It really should be shut down as the animals are kept out in the heat far too long, and seeing a monkey smoking for the amusement of visitors shouldnt feature in a modern city.

Very nice. This Souq is much more authentic than souks in Dubai or Muscat. Our kids loved the part with the birds. Close to the Souq Waqif is the Falcon-Souq and close by the horse stables with the Arabian Horses.
