“Market shopping”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

Good prices and lots of choice but be prepared to be persuaded by many touts to buy a Pashmina. Gold, silver, Omani clothing, handbags, scarfs and various sorts of tourist giftware. Try and visit on a day when a tour ship has not just berthed just across the water. Bargaining seems to be expected but when a cruise boat has docked there seems to be less flexibility.

“Make sure you bargain.”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Make sure you bargain and visit few shops. I picked up scarves, frankincense, and oud. Those are what they are known for.

“One of the best”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We know the souk very well after having lived in Oman. These days it can get very crowded if a cruise ship is in port, but one can buy pashminas, local art prints, and all manner of artefacts in the little shops tucked away along the narrow alleyways. It has recently been refurbished inasmuch that the ceilings are redecorated with Islamic art decor and stained glasss and most floors re-tiled. This does not detract from its charm. The vendors do not pester, are very polite and will take a courteous no for an answer!

“Worth a short visit – nothing more”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

You can get around the Souk well within an hour.
There are lots of stalls selling much the same thing: pashmina’s, spices, incense, Omani headgear and national costumes etc etc. The vendors try their hardest to entice you in to their shops but once you have indicated you are not interested they don’t tend to pester you further.
Much of the stuff is for the tourist market and can be sourced elsewhere in the city. Good to explore the small alleyways off the main souk area which have some different items for sale. Just be careful of uneven ground especially in some of the very narrow alleys.
