i was surprised with this building at first. Mind you at the time i was severely frost bitten, then suffering jet lag and feeling a bit weird with such a sudden hot August temperature. It looks very German Bauhaus to me.

Thank Fiona J

We visited as part of a guided tour which helped. The buildings on each side of the walkway leading to the palace are government buildings. You can't go in the palace itself so you have to view it from the gates. The building is difficult to describe - colourful and imaginative I guess! It is worth seeing if you like architecture and buildings.

There are also some old Portuguese forts nearby, giving a clue to some of Oman's history.

The fun part was discovering the port behind the palace and seeing the writing carved into the rocks.

The area is good for a quick stop.

What beautiful surroundings for a palace. Marble and flowers and history. Try to go at a quiet time to get the full feeling.

I was there 10 days ago and liked it but nothing special. A large square with building both side and by the end of the square the Sultan's Palace is. You can't get closer, have to stay at the fence you can make some photos.
I can't say that waste of time to visit it but does not worth more than 10 minutes.

We stopped here briefly on our tour around Muscat and it was interesting to look at the architecture and surrounds but, as others have mentioned, you can't go inside so you really only need a short time to look around and then keep moving. In my opinion, not a "must see".
