Everything we ordered tasted of cigarettes, except the falafel, perhaps because the spices managed somehow to overwhelm the cigarette odor. And indeed, it turned out there were people smoking two tables away from ours. When we pointed out to the waiters that it is illegal in Lebanon to smoke in restaurants, we were told that the owner want to allow people to smoke inside the restaurant. Basically, we were told to go stuff ourselves. Not only is this rude, it is illegal, and it makes the food taste bad. The implicit advice of the owner, to take our business elsewhere, should apply to all non-smoking would-be customers. It is the owners' loss, really. And a very poor reflection on the willingness of the locals to follow the rule of law.
