Robert Mouawad Private Museum is truly both a beautiful home and repository of great pieces of jewelry and antiquities. Originally the home of Henri Pharaon who amassed a great collection of Syrian and Turkish objects among others, it was purchased by Robert Mouawad and restored to the private museum. My favorite was the many decorative wooden panels that adorn the walls and ceilings and the Arabian architectural features. The collection includes many large Chinese porcelains, Greek Roman stele, Islamic pottery, carpets, tiles, books, and of course jewelry from Robert Mouawad's collection. The second largest diamond in the world, Excelsior, is on display with the most expensive bra gift set encrusted with 9,000 gems.

The museum is open Tues.-Sun. 9am-5pm. Admission was $6. An English speaking guide can be arranged in advance for $20. I did not get a response back from my email inquiry, though. If you are staying in the hotel district near the Phoenicia it is a ten minute walk. Pictures are not allowed inside and unfortunately none available in the small gift area. The outside courtyard is also quite beautiful and offers some seating among the greenery to plan your next stop. Allow one-two hours for your visit.
