If you are in Iran and have no time to visit historical places in Isfahan, Shiraz and other old cities, I highly recommend you to visit the National museum of Iran. It consists of 2 buildings: the older one which is the Ancient Iran museum and the newer which is the Museum of Islamic era. The museum of Ancient Iran exhibits very nice and famous objects fro prehistoric era to Sassanian era. Many carvings and objects from Persepolis are also shown there. It takes around 4 hours to visit both museums but this means just walking by the objects. The cafe of the museum in the backyard is also a nice place to have a break in between and enjoy yourself a drink.

The museum itself is housed in a beautiful building. The collection is excellent but the layout is basic and is in need of some revamping.
