The rooms are definitely not as nice and modern as in the newer local hotels but at least they have updated the linens to the more 5-star standard of the white duvet.

The executive floor is definitely a plus with the nice happy hour including snacks and free alcoholic (and non) beverages as well a small breakfast.

The real downside to the hotel is the lack of internet access in the rooms. In this day and age it seems that every 5 star hotel should have something available for internet. Definitely not handy for business travellers.

There are a number of good restaurants in the hotel as well a number of even better ones a short distance away.

Highly recommend using the hotel car to get to the airport to avoid the hassle of haggling with the local taxis.

I would recommend this hotel to tourists but the lack of internet would keep me from staying there on business again.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights during early February as part of a business training course. Upon seeing the hotel from the outside, I was initally disappointed...it looked old (which it is..apparently 40 years old!) ..however upon entering it things improved tremendously.

Escalators lead to a modern/contemporary lobby. I was staying in a double room with breakfast and lunch included (both at the Al Waha cafe downstairs) for which the company was paying around $220 a night.

The room itself was well maintained and it did not look at all as if the hotel was over 40 years old! ... my double bed was in fact a king size bed.. clean sheets/duvet/ well maintained furniture (had a comfy chair and a small table in my room) ... the bathroom was a decent size.. nice pressured hot water in the shower..
Housekeeping were great...called them up a couple of times to borrow an iron etc and they were there in less than 10 mins..very polite and courteous... room service was great too (though did not order much except a couple of cups of tea and a cake) as the waiters were very courteous.

The TV in the rooms could be improved though.. currently a dated 17" or 18" set offering local cable channels.. there was no pay per view /no DVD player in the room (many competitive hotels are now offering flat screens and DVD players in rooms as standard)...

Also minibar items were pricey ($1.50 for a packet of chips and $3 for an orange juice) but I guess they are supposed to be!

The highlight of my stay at the Gulf Hotel was the food... both breakfast and lunch at the Al Waha cafe was brilliant.. there was a decent buffet spread (for both) and the quality of each dish was worthy of an a la carte menu....usually you don't expect buffets to be as good a quality as a la carte.. the cocktail drinks were really good too (fresh and cold)... An another impressive feature of the hotel was that it was connected by an airconditioned/carpeted hallway all the way to the connecting conference centre (which is a good 5 mins walk otherwise) ...must have cost them quite a lot to build that and for the sole purpose of ensuring guest convenience!

I wouldn't mind staying at the Gulf Hotel for my next training conference since quality and business facility wise it does not disappoint (WiFi internet connections are also available for around $14 for 2 hours or $28 for 24 hours) but it is not really a hotel suited for holiday since there are not many attractions nearby and not many leisure facilities there (taxi rides in bahrain are ver expensive so you are better of staying nearer downtown).

I stayed here for 4 nights for a business visit. My employer regularly uses this hotel, and colleagues seem to have mixed views about it. I was upgraded from a standard room to a 1 bed/loung/kitchen suite as they'd run out of regular rooms. This was in the new block, and really nice, except that there was a really noisy and vibrating generator nearby which was unpleasant unless you had one of the two TVs on. I was cold quite a lot of the time, as the weather was unusually cold for Bahrain, and there seemed to be no heating and a very thin duvet on the bed.

Breakfast was really good, and I used the gym and pool once. There are separate gyms for men and women, and it's really hard to find the women's gym, which is off a staircase in front of the reception area, whereas the men's gym is next to the pool (if you want to work out and swim, you have to get changed twice!). The gym however, is well equiped with friendly staff, no extra charges and classes every day except Friday. The swimming pool is wonderful, and heated in the winter. I had it to myself on the Friday morning.

I've stayed at a few hotels in Manama now and this is by far the worst for the money.

On the approach to the hotel the exterior looks very tired and dated (This theme continues on inside the hotel). There was some major concrete spalling off about half way up the building and the reinforcement was exposed. This cant be good. Certain sections had been repaired and stood out like a sore thumb.

On walking through the front door into reception you are confronted by the red carpeted stairs. The carpet is so warn you can see holes and is thread bare in places.

Check in was ok.

The rooms AC did not work and was very cold. The phone at the side of the bed was ok for incoming calls but was unable to use it for outgoing calls. Had to use the one in the bathroom. Room furnishings looked worn and grubby as did the carpet.

I ordered two separate rooms service dinners that were mediocre at best. Breakfast in the main restaurant was ok but certainly not on par with the price you are paying for a stay at this over rated tired 80's hotel.

I managed to get through my breakfast before a waiter decided to ask me if I wanted coffee, no offer of tea!

Your money would be better spent at the Best Western. The pictures on the internet look good but these were probably taken whent he hotel was new.

There is no way this should qualify as a 5-star hotel. I would give it 2 or 3, max.

I have been told there is an old wing and a new wing. If this is true, I certainly was in the old wing. The word "dated" came to mind pretty quickly, and never went away.

Pros:
- Good convention centre in the complex
- Wifi worked fine and wasn't too expensive

Cons:
- Incredibly dated rooms and furnishings. My bathroom had matching green plastic basin and tub, with those clear plastic tap handles I haven't seen since the 70s
- Poor restaurants - it's a shame to see how they can wreck Thai food so badly
- Smokers everywhere - foyer, elevators, cafes
- Big well-equipped gym but they must have cheap outside memberships because it was always way too crowded.

In summary, only stay here if you're attending a conference in the centre and even then see if you can ask for the "new" wing (if it really exists)

The Gulf Hotel lobby gives you the feel of an upscale hotel (even though it is a bit gaudy). The floors are waxed to perfection and the restaurants and salon services are abundant. The room is the basic hotel room with nice sized bathroom, but not very hot water. 2 water bottles daily, turn down service, great view, bad TV stations (bad TV at the Diplomat too), doorbells for each room, close to swarma alley restaurants and stores, pretty landscaping, decent customer service. I thought it was very nice, but not particularly impressive until I stayed at the Diplomat, then I wished I was back at the Gulf. I'd go back. Jazzzione.

I have stayed at the Gulf Hotel on a number of occasions over the years and I would endorse the opinion of the last reviewer that it has lost its edge.

Standards have declined and though there is a core of world-class staff the hotel has also recruited personnel who are unsuited to the service industry.

The last correspondent is correct in that most taxis have disconnected meters and seek a BD fare of at least 7 dinars.
