“It's a place of calm in Riyadh”
Reviewed June 7, 2013 via mobile

I stay here very few weeks or so and apart from the rooms being somewhat dated, it's not a bad hotel at all. Many Riyadh hotels are antiseptic and characterless but the Khozama has a little bit more character, the staff are talkative without being too obsequious and the food is generally good. The reception are gets busy which is a good sign of folks being comfortable being there or maybe it's the small bedrooms that force people out for fear of feeling like a battery chicken.

Update the rooms to a modern standard and the hotel would get 5 stars. The flat screen TV's are a good start but keep updating and brightening the rooms up as there s no view worth opening the blinds for, so the inside should be lighter.

No plans to change my stays there - it's just comfortable, but eventually the small rooms and vicious aircon will force me away unless something changes.

As a frequent guest at Khozama hotel I could say that I am always happy form the great service and the standards of the hotel. Rooms are small but well appointed, clean, and in a modern design. The hotel has also a number of restaurants which are of high standards and never left me disappointed. Its fitness area is well appointed including also a swimming pool. Hotel’s location is great as it is very central in Olaya Main Street close to coffee shops, restaurants and shopping centers.

Many thanks again to the whole staff as they are always very helpful, especially to Mr. Ameer Sameer for his professionalism and kindness.

While I am packing for another business trip I leave for tomorrow I am finally doing my catchup on some reviews.

So Saudi Arabia and the Al Khozama Riyadh. The rooms are small. It's like staying in a shoe box and you look out the window into some timber slats. :(
When I said the place is old it really is. Remember the old phones from the 1980's yes they still use them in rooms. Now it is not a retro theme they are having it is just old!

The breakfast was nice and the staff extremely attentive.

Will try it's sister hotel next visit... The newest thing about the hotel is the tv in your room!

Overall, this is not a bad hotel. Quality four star hotels ate hard to find in Riyadh and you do save a package compared to the Khozama's sister hotel next door. It's a five minute walk from the Khozama to the Faisalia (most of it via an air-conditioned walk-way), so if that's what you need, the location is spot on.

I liked the breakfast, which was included in my rate and had lots of choice. Dinner in the garden was good, too. The service overall was very good and everybody was friendly. No issues re. cleanliness either.

So why only three circles then? Mainly because of three issues:

This was the first hotel in the Middle East I have stayed in that, when being told that the room would be for single occupancy, actually gave me a single room. I mean, a room with a single bed. I have never seen this happening anywhere else in the region in 4 & 5 star hotels. You can certainly stay in the Holiday Inn around the corner from the Khozama and you'll get a double room for single occupancy as standard.
Not a deal killer, sure, but would have been nice to know beforehand.

Secondly, the inane door lock. I just about get that a hotel still retains physical keys, but to have doors that actually need manually locking & unlocking, i.e. you leave your room to go to breakfast & you'll have to manually lock your room door, that's pushing it. It didn't feel safe having to lock myself in at night, plus it's a pain in the old behind to remember to lock the door when you step out. Meh.

Lastly, the Internet. Sure, it's free (well, it was for me anyway), but you get what you pay for. The Internet at the Khozama is like some lost soul wandering through the city - sometimes it's there, sometimes it's somewhere else. It's not of the standard required by today's travelers.

Just to end on a positive note, though. There's one area the Khozama really excels, though: In-room sockets! Finally a hotel that has more sockets in their rooms than you can poke a stick at, including right next to the bed. Well done!

Summary: If you need a central location, a decent breakfast, and loads of in-room sockets, then the Khozama is a great choice. If, on the other hand, you have a memory like a goldfish and are unable to remember to lock your room door, or require consistent Internet service, there may be better places out there for you.

Nice welcome from an efficient reception desk, the rooms are clean, they have all the required work facilities, the beds are OK, not great, I had a single so ask for a double for a more spacious sleep, the hotel is quiet which is good as in others you could be woken by morning prayers. Finally the breakfast is above average, so the start of your day is good as you will be full!

This is a relatively small hotel that is tucked up next to the landmark Al Faisaliah Tower in Riyadh. It has OK facilities, good sports facilities, and is right by one of the better shopping malls in Riyadh. Also, everyone (i.e. especially taxi drivers) knows where the "Faisaliah Tower" is, so it is also very easy to get back to after a day elsewhere in the city... :)

The hotel is fairly old by Riyadh standards, but not yet old enough to have any 'quaint charm'. Public areas are long overdue for a bit of refurbishment - currently everything is tired looking and mostly beige. The two lifts that serve the accommodation floors are tiny and slow. However the rooms themselves are OK - most now have been refurbished, but on the small side I think.

The Hotel has three restaurants. A buffet style one which serves standard hotel fare in the evening, and quite good breakfasts in the morning. A conventional one that basically serves the room-service menu to you at tables - but be warned the room service menu is not that good, and service in the restaurant is glacially slow. And an outdoor 'Barbecue' restaurant that does good food, has a nice ambience, and shows big-screen sporting events when appropriate. However all three are, for what you get, really quite expensive: the outdoor restaurant eye wateringly so.

The Hotel does have some strengths. The staff are helpful, polite, and knowledgeable. It has a good value car / limo service. It has a good gym, a really good swimming pool, two squash courts, plus a sauna and steam room, none of which are usually that busy. The rooms are also not so expensive.

Room Tip: Try for a room on fifth (top) floor.

Dear Glawrie,

First and foremost, we take this opportunity to thank yo for choosing Hotel Al Khozama for your stay during your recent visit to Riyadh. Your constructive comments are gratifying and encourages us further in our efforts to upgrade our product.

Yes, the hotel Al Khozama is 35 years old, yet we have been every effort to maintain the facility at an optimum level as the Guest comfort and satisfaction are our primary concerns, yet some shortcomings do exist. Also we agree that the rooms are smaller compared to modern hotels because the hotel was built 35 years ago according to the standards that prevailed at the time and to meet the needs of that era. Although we have carried out renovations from time to time, when required, we were not able to expand the rooms purely due to the prefabricated nature of the building which prevents us from effecting any structural changes. So the size of the rooms remained the same. However, if you prefer a larger room, we will be happy to accommodate you in a more spacious double or suite room to make your future stays more comfortable.

Regarding your comments on the food & beverage outlets and the food served in the restaurants, we are happy to note that you were mostly satisfied with the standards. As regards the Room Service Menu as well as the other areas of the service which you have pointed out as requiring further improvements have been noted for immediate review and to effect the necessary improvements. Whereas, the food prices are concerned, we hope for your understanding on the fact that the prices are based on the market demand as well as on the price structures of the other hotels in the area.

We thank you once again for taking the time to post your comments on the Trip Adviser web site because it is due to honest feed back that we learn where we stand and what our valued guests expect. which enables us to make the necessary changes or improvements to surpass the expectations of our guests.

Whilst looking forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Hotel Al Khozama soon, we assure you of our best services at all times and remain.

Was here in early March (2013) on a business trip and stayed for just the one night. Was neither wowed or shocked by anything!

Service was fine (friendly greeting, helpful etc) but the place just felt a bit dated. Room was clean and tidy but was quite small and slightly gloomy. My recollection is that the bathroom, although serviceable and clean, just looked a bit tired.

Okay for an overnight business stay but don't think I'd be keen to spend an extended period there. Didn't have an opportunity to explore the surrounding area but it seemed to be conveniently located.

Dear Mr. Stephen R,

We take this opportunity to thank you for choosing Hotel Al Khozama for your recent stay in Riyadh and for taking the time to post some constructive comments about the hotel on the Trip Adviser web site.

We definitely agree with your comment that the property looked a bit dated. Being a 35 year old hotel, we have been exerting every effort to maintain the facility at an optimum level with refurbishments from time to time because the guest comfort and satisfaction are our primary concerns. However, although numerous renovation programs were carried out, we have not been able to enlarge the rooms due to the prefabricated nature of the building which prevents us from effecting any structural changes, thus the rooms remained the same as the way it was built 35 years ago to suit the needs of that era.
We also have noted your comment regarding the lighting in the room for future review, as we are in the process of considering our options for a renovation in the near future, however, depending on the booking situation.

Taking your over all view of the hotel into consideration, we will be happy to accommodate you in a more spacious double or a suite room during your future visits and would like to invite you to explore all Al Khozama facilities and enjoy a longer and a more comfortable stay in a double or a suite room. We are certain that the comforts you find in a larger room and our hospitality and personalized service will make you happy and feel at home.

Whilst assuring you of our best attention at all times, we look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Hotel Al Khozama soon and remain.
