“Okay for an overnight stay”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

The Makarim Riyadh Hotel is located very close to King Khalid International Airport, northeast of Riyadh. There is no other hotel that close to the airport. Approaching the main entrance it really looked like a five star hotel.
First doubts about five star service came up when I experienced the hotel staff's poor ability to understand and speak english languange at the checkin counter. Entering my room on the fifth floor I was immediately hit by a heat wave. Obviously the room was not occupied for some days and the air condition was turned off. The result was a room temperature of well above 30 degrees centigrade.
The room was spacious with a good and clean bed and well equipped with flat TV, working desk, iron and ironing board, tea / coffee cooker and a mini bar. The bath room was clean but a little bit worn out. Trying to charge my phones and the laptop I experienced the next surprise: I found not less than four different standards of power plugs in the room - a nice exercise for the traveller's collection of power adapters ;-) .
The supreme hospitality at the airport's immigration counter was the reason for my arrival well after midnight and the reason for my desire to find some sleep very soon after arrival. However, the noise of the air condition made it somewhat difficult. My options were very limited: Try to sleep in a room of more than 30 degrees or try to ignore the a/c's noise.
The breakfast was okay but nothing special. As usual in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the enternainment options in and around the hotel were more than limited.
The Makarim Hotel is suitable for travellers who expect a three star standard and look for an accommodation close to the airport. For vacations I would recommend to look elsewhere.

The Makarim Riyadh Hotel is a refreshing hotel in the dessert around Riyadh (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), near to the King Khaled International Airport. Indicated as a 5 star hotel you will find a clean and spacious setup with friendly staff, helpfull and eager to make you feel comfortable. The rooms are big in every meaning of the word, 'kingsize bed' sets a new standard to the meaning BIG, enormous seems to be better. Upon arrival there was a complimentary dish of fresh fruit in my room, joined by fresh baked cookies. Of course there is also a water cooker to prepare coffee or tea in the room.
From the window you will see sand, lots of sand, as you may expect of a dessert. Although outside temperatures around 35 degrees centigrade is normal, the inside temperature may be considered cold (approx 15-20 degrees C). There is a rooftop panorama restaurant but it opens at 19:00 hours, a time at which darkness has already set in. In the spacious lobby, complete with a water fountain, you can have non-alcoholic drinks and really good snacks, try the beefburger and you will never have one again in one of the normal fastfoodchains and the price is not that much more. Since the hotel is in the dessert and the town Riyadh is at some distance, there are some small shops inside the hotel for necessities and luxury. There is also a beautifull mosque available at the premises.
For outdoor entertainment there is a swimmingpool, tenniscourt and fitness facilities (not my cup of tea). In fact, the whole entry is a green garden with lots of flowers.
The hotel in itself is really good, the only drawbacks are the distance to town and probably the limited possibilities to come to the Kingdom in regard to obtain visa. I'm very sorry that I did not have the chance to have a look at the historical town of Riyadh which is the biggest city of the Kingdom and was reported as very interesting. Maybe next time.

Room Tip: When you take a taxi from the airport, make sure that you either choose the 'London Taxi' wi...

The hotel has improved since i first visited 3 years ago - reception has now relocated and they provide a car to collect and take you to and from the airport. The rooms are unchanged, in need of an fittings update and smell of smoke - goes with the territory though. The marble floors do not help when people in adjoining rooms drag chairs instead of lifting them, There seemed to be constant activity in the corridor outside my room. Free Wifi is much improved. There is little to do at the hotel the pool and fitness center are not that welcoming.

Room Tip: Order Room service as meals are then cooked to order rather than use buffet style service which drie...

I used this hotel as a stopover hotel on my way out of Saudi Arabia. It is the only hotel anywhere near the airport, and although a bit pricey, if setting off for an early flight it is very useful. I found the hotel to be a little tired in terms of fittings but to be perfectly honest I have been to hotels a lot newer that have had worse maintenance. The hotel is used extensively by aircrew, but this is Saudi, so late night wild parties are not likely to interfere with your sleep. So for those of us who will arrive late and leave early, and would rather sleep than spend another hour in a cab heading into Riyadh; the beds are comfy, the sheets are clean and I didn't have any difficulty getting hot water for the shower.

This hotel is located at the bottom of the runway at Riyadh airport. There is nothing to do in the area as it is surrounded by desert. On the plus side, the hotel was empty and I was able to take a swim in the pool without anyone disturbing me. If this wasn't Saudi, I would have certainly considered taking all my clothes off and swimming naked as no-one was around!

The bed was huge as well. You could easily have a foursome in there with no problem at all!

Had to stay here for a 2-day all-day workshop at the hotel. Rooms are not bad, but not sure about the Five star rating.

Food was average, nothing stands-out but you can swallow your bites.

I think its overpriced when compared to similar hotels.

Overall, it should be 3-3.5 star hotel. Wouldn't stay here again unless i had too.

Room Tip: non-smoking king rooms

I got stranded at Riyadh airport due to a mix-up with flights. This was quite expensive but better than going all the way back into Riyadh city - where these is nothing to do anyway. The hotel itself is out dated and the food is poor. It is full of air hotesses and crew passing through Saudi. Staff was also rude. I guess they don't need to market themselves as its the only hotel in or close to the airport grounds as far as I am aware.
