The oldest market place in the city of Amman, it is extremely crowded with shops and street sellers. It is a good place to walk but beware as people are all over the place and it is advisable to get there by public transport and then walk as parking can be a hassle. When shopping always try to bargain and check nearby shops as they tend to have the same offerings most of the times. The Roman Amphitheatre is within walking distance from here. I don't suggest eating any of the street food for healthy & safety reasons, although there are some good fresh fish restaurants and shisha cafe.

Anything that your heart desires can be found in Al Balad. Shops for oud, clothes, souvenirs, ornaments, food, household goods, antiques, books, party/hobby stores...it goes on. You have to try hashems falafel and stop at the sugar cane juice place! Both are amazing and a must do whilst you're here.
It's populated by many Palestinian Jordanians and you will notice a nod towards this from the Palestinian flags hanging in the shops, so if it's a keffiyeh you're looking for this is the place to buy it.
It can be very busy depending on what time of day you go, but if it's old school you want, al balad is the place to be. Realistically i'd spend an entire day or even two here so not to miss anything.

Hello.
Downtown is the old place where you can walk, eat and buy a lot of souvenirs.
I enjoyed walking there many times.

Al Balad was not what I expected and was quite disappointed in our visit. Some fruit stands were full of ripe fresh fruit while others were not as appealing. A number of the stores were filled with Dollar store paraphernalia, some with cheap souvenirs. I was looking for old world type markets and sadly did not find them.
