“A fine hostel in a great location”
Reviewed September 10, 2010

While the Palace Hotel is neither a palace nor a hotel it’s a decent hostel, very reasonably priced, and located is a very busy shopping district of Amman.

The rooms are dated and tired but all the basic needs are there. The A/C worked perfect, which is important as we were roasting in the middle of the summer. Things are as clean as one can expect from a budget hostel and breakfast is standard - eggs, pita bread, cheese, jam, tea/coffee.

The onsite internet is cheap and a real time saver. The place also books all sorts of excursion for sight seeing at very reasonable prices... having said that expect a lot of driving time and no guides. My wife and I did a full day north Jordan (Jeresh) tour. We had no issues whatsoever with service. The location is great - right near the huge Mosque and not far from the Citadel... lots of restaurants and shops close by. With the convenience there is a bit of noise. It’s not the quietest place at night.

All and all this is a good place to stay providing you understand what you’re getting into - a budget hostel. And that’s not a bad thing considering how pricey Amman can be...

This is definitely one of the cheapest options in Amman, and although the room were very worn (our first one had a crumbling wall) and the water smelled funny (probably beyond their control) I think they kept things relatively clean, I was expecting more from a Lonely Planet Our Pick. It's a helpful place to stay if you need services like daytrips, transportation to the airport, internet cafes, free (or at least included in the cost) breakfast, etc. and the location is convenient for exploring the downtown area and its sights (Roman theater, Citidel).

We stayed at the Palace Hotel for 4 nights. It is in the heart of the Balad in Amman yet a noisy location (the taxis are forever beeping their horns with the exception of Friday mornings). Good location for browsing the markets and Rainbow Street. The staff and friendly and helpful and there is very cheap wifi. Bearing in mind this is a budget hotel, you get what you pay for! The rooms were not clean (we brought sleeping sheets to lay over the beds), the stand-up shower filled to the brim with water within about 30 minutes and the toilet seat didn't quite fit it's bowl! Our air conditioner never turned on and the view was dire but the central lounge was a key location to share backpacking stories and tips with other budget travelers.

Our verdict is to pay the extra 10 JD to go somewhere a bit nicer or pay for your taxi to drop you in Madaba which is 30 minutes and you'll get much more bang for your buck.

This is a great hotel! Not fancy but clean, reasonably priced and definitely provides all the basic needs. Reliable A/C, cheap Internet, good breakfast and in a really central location. Its best assets though are the people - especially the woman who I believe is the manager and who's name I never got. When we got to Amman, we had some ideas of where we wanted to go and she helped up plan out a great trip and organized a driver, who was incredible. They made the whole trip come together and it was an amazing experience! For the budget traveller, looking for a great adventure in Jordan, this is the place to stay!

We made a reservation at this hotel based on Lonely Planet's recommendation...I know the travel guide is a few years old, but I think this hotel must have gone downhill since then. When I made the reservation, I was clear to specify that I was traveling with my husband and we wanted a double room. This was confirmed twice through email before our arrival. Upon check-in we were taken to a room with three single beds and told that there were no double rooms, and that in fact there is only one room in the hotel with a "big" bed. When my husband told the woman at the reception desk that we were not pleased, she said that it was not her fault and put him on the phone with another woman (who was apparently in a higher position) who apologized and acknowledged the mistake, telling my husband she would reduce the price and give us a free dinner. However, when the receptionist heard this she started yelling at my husband, and when he tried to explain she threatened to call the police to take him away! It was completely absurd and in the end, being exhausted, we took the triple room and were promised that the next day we could have the room with the "big" bed. The next day, despite checking three times that we would be moved to the "big" bed room, the room was never actually available and we ended up staying in the triple.

In addition to the extremely poor service, our room was obviously dirty in numerous spots, had a broken window, was missing the remote for the air conditioner, and the bathroom was hardly large enough for my 6'4" husband to turn around in. Breakfast was standard budget hostel fare: bread, boiled egg, cheese wedge, jam, butter and tea/coffee.

Overall, it was definitely not worth the price and i wish we had looked at other budget hotels in the area, but we were only staying two nights and were too tired to deal with it.

The location is ideal in downtown Amman and the room was clean and comfortable enough. The internet was efficient and breakfast was good. It may not be comfortable as a 5star hotel but it is comfortable enough for the reasonable price and has all the facilities you need.

This hotel was adequate and it wasn't particularly clean. The room on our first night was disgusting and we were moved for the remaining nights although the new one wasn't that much better but at least the sheets looked cleaner!

Breakfast was nothing much to write home about.

The staff were friendly and the central location was a definite plus point. It was cheap but I'm not sure whether we could've got somewhere a little better value for money.
