Twentieth century architecture. Square looks best at night. Good to sit and have coffee in the cafe.

I know the auditorium since its inauguration in 1957 and have regularly attended the concerts of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra since. There is this old story about a german tourist visiting Tel Aviv and flabbergasted by the fact that the auditroium was called after Thomas Mann. The guide explained him that the name comes not from Thomas but from Fredric Mann. And what books did he write asked the tourist, no books he just wrote out the cheque. The building is regarded by now as a historical monument and a lengthy and arduous discussion preceded its renovation for acoustical reasons. No doubt about that the renovation of its furniture, paneling and overall outfit are overdue. The renovation constrained by severe restrictions is underway and it is hard to tell its outcome. Recently Habima Square has undergone a major face- lift with the Habima Theatre being fully renovated and a new underground parking installation being put in place. We're all anxious to see the outcome of the acoustical and architectural changes being fed up with the interim concert halls where IPO is holding its concerts over the last year. A cloak room, modern sanitary facilities and easily accessible catering services would be also welcome.
