I stayed one night at the Shalom Hotel with my better half and we really enjoyed the stay. We are local, and have stayed at many hotels in Tel Aviv, and indeed all over Israel.
The Shalom & Relax is completely renovated, and has been decorated in a very pleasing blue-and-white Mediterranean theme. Once we got in off the street were pleasantly surprised by the tasteful decor even although we had already seen the images on the website. We were greeted with hot cider, and a selection of nuts and dried fruit while we checked in.
The staff are all pleasant and helpful, something that you don't take for granted in Israel, and especially in Tel Aviv.
The Shalom is a small boutique hotel (about 50 rooms), and has no shops or restaurants on the premises. We prefer it that way.
The lobby doubles as the breakfast area. The breakfast is excellent: A rich dairy buffet with all sorts of goodies, but also a good selection of healthy food. You get eggs and hot beverages made to order, every day, including Saturday. This is a big deal as most of the hotels in Israel do not provide freshly cooked food or brewed coffee on Saturday. One of the previous reviewers mentioned that he would have liked a local "Shakshuka" (a piquant egg and vegetable dish) for his breakfast. Well, now it is on the menu.
At all other times there is a selection of teas and light snacks, such as cookies, available in the lobby. There is also a happy hour, but we missed that.
There are three types of room: Standard, Superior, and Spa. We stayed in a Superior room. The room was clean and very nicely decorated. It is a good size room with twin beds (we would have preferred a single large bed) and a large bathroom. The bed-linen is high quality. The bathroom has a corner-type bath tub and shower. My only nit-picks are that there was no tissue dispenser, and the light in the bathroom, while pleasant, was a little dim for make-up.
The room is let down by the view, but that was no surprise to us since we know the area. The Superior rooms have a view to the back of the hotel.
The Spa rooms have a view to the front of the hotel, but you still can't see much except for the Hilton across the road. The Spa rooms are also a good size, but some of the standard rooms are very small and have only a shower (no bath).
There is free wireless broadband in the entire hotel (I didn't check on the roof...) and there is a PC in every room with full internet access. It uses the flat panel TV as it's display, a wireless keyboard is provided and a USB hub. You can get complementary movies on a disk-on-key from the front desk, or you can bring whatever you like on your own DOK. Most of the hotels in Israel still charge for wireless broadband.
There hotel has no parking. If you need to park, there is an arrangement with the Hilton across the street, where each exit from the underground parking lot is 40NIS (about $11 -- OK for overnight parking in Tel Aviv but expensive for a short period).
The location is just OK. It is a few minutes walk from the beach, and within walking distance of the Tel Aviv some of the night life. But cabs are easy to get.
The entire hotel is non-smoking. The only place where smoking is allowed is on the rooftop terrace.
The Shalom & Relax is now our go-to hotel in Tel Aviv. We had a 5-star experience. We see no reason to stay at the more expensive and more cramped 5-star hotels along the beach front.
