The Shalom and Relax Hotel is run by two professional, extremely competent women, manager Eti and her assistant Simone. These two try very hard indeed and succeed with lots of charm. The spirit of Golda Meir is alive and well and living in Hayarkon Street Tel Aviv. And Ben Gurion's house is close by too.
The Shalom has been a hotel for at least forty years and in its present incarnation as part of the Atlas Boutique Hotel Group for about three. The location is great, near the newly refurbished Port Area which has been developed into a busy, buzzy outdoor retail and restaurant mall. Most things in Tel Aviv are within walking distance. The main downstairs reception/lounge/breakfast area is bright, airy, comfortable and welcoming. The breakfasts really are as good as the various TA reports attest. Start your diet now and don't bother with dinner. The chill out rooftop terrace is a great bonus. As in other Atlas hotels happy hour is a welcome, generous extra freebie, especially after a hard day pounding the streets of this humid (but cool) city.
However, even the Shalom is not quite perfect. The wifi signal in my room was very weak and I had to repeatedly log in. Why do Israeli hotels not make their wi fi as simple to use as hotels in Europe do? I would have liked the sex workers' cards strewn all over the pavement /sidewalk outside the Shalom to have been removed more frequently. The size of our superior room was just about OK. Don't expect to hold a party in your bedroom. It had the narrowest entrance door I have ever encountered in any hotel anywhere. Guinness Book of World Records? You could just about have swung a cat in the bathroom but only just. Hayarkon Street is busy, Israeli drivers make liberal use of their horns and like to play their music loud 24/7. All part of the Tel Aviv experience.
A special mention for our hardworking housekeeper Tatianya. She really is a star providing service with a smile. Nothing was too much trouble and answers to our questions were delivered in her unique cosmopolitan blend of Hebrew, English and Russian all with that warm, genuine smile. Lovely.
