“Wonderful staff and a fab hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2014

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights, and we were so impressed with this hotel. I run a Mystery Shopping business, so I am quite fussy and have a tendency to inspect everything from the smile on the faces of the staff through to the speck of dust under the bed. I am happy to report - no dust and many smiles. Most important of all, we look forward to staying again as it was a great experience.

The hotel, room, staff and location went beyond expectations.

The Rothschild restaurant at their sister hotel was a first rate dining experience.

Definitely recommend for location, comfort and smart assistance

We couldn't have been happier with everything related to our experience at the Diaghilev. The location was perfect for exploring the city on foot, the room was a spacious two-room suite with full kitchen and great sitting area with unique furniture and art, and the staff was beyond helpful and lovely. Little touches, like the water and REAL orange juice in the room gratis for us, the delicious clementines at the front desk, and packing breakfast for us when we had an early flight to catch added even more to a great stay. And the price is right; we got more for our money than at any other accommodation in Israel. The only tiny thing that wasn't perfect was the sound of pipes clanging at night but it wasn't constant and ear plugs took care of it.

Upon arrival you're greeted with the warmest Israeli smiles, tangerines, oranges and wine. The small lobby is welcoming and relaxing. My "quarters" were fairly large; with a living room, kitchenette and a separate bedroom. The amenities in the bathroom were top notch, Israeli products, from the Dead Sea. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of the whole staff. From the reception to the cafe / breakfast room, everybody was just great. The breakfast was healthy with the tastiest tomatoes...I would stay at The Diaghilev again and would definitely suggest to friends and business associates.

We spent a week at the hotel in March/April 2014. We chose the hotel based on TA ratings.

Pluses in the order of importance:

- silent, absolutely no disturbing noises ( we stayed at the sixth floor)
- comfortable bed
- working shower with warm water available all the time
- beautiful spacious rooms
- flawless room cleaning (no missing towels or toilet paper rolls on any day)
- friendly and helpful service at the front desk
- check-in and check-out was a breeze, no unnecessary paperwork
- great location, close to restaurants and Rothschild boulevard

Minuses:

-broken promises
we were told at arrival that a new bottle of water would be delivered to the room daily. We were also told not to drink tap water as the pipes are old. Well, no water on the second day. We called the reception and were told to drink tap water. We insisted and got a bottle delivered. After that, no water bottles were delivered on any day. In itself it was not a big deal, we could easily buy water at the supermarket, which we first did not do as we believed in the promise.

-the breakfast
we did not enjoy the breakfast. We were told in advance that the hotel does serve continental breakfast. We did not however expect it to consist of sub par bread with one dice of butter for three persons, served with a jar of tomatoes and your choice of yoghurt or yet another jar of egg butter/feta/etc. No toast, fresh buns, cheese, sweet breads etc. Sometimes croissants could be ordered separately, but not always. The coffee and orange juice was nice though. Ok, maybe we are picky, after all it is a matter of taste.

Worse than the breakfast itself was the service, or rather the lack of it. When you enter the small bar/breakfast room in the morning you would expect the staff to at least look at you and greet you. None of that in this bar (with one exception). The staff behind the counter usually continued with whatever they were doing. Having sat at a table for a couple of minutes you were sometimes greeted with a "I'll be with you in a minute, ok?". Service was quite slow even though there were only a few guests, still the staff seemed to be busy all the time.

One morning, April 3, I had enough and decided to have breakfast at the small café at Rothschild Blvd, I left my family sitting at the hotel bar, walked to Rothschild Blvd, ordered, was served, consumed and paid for the breakfast and walked back to the hotel only to find my family still waiting to be served! Hilarious!

Another morning, April 4, we actually got no service at all. It was quite bizarre as the guy behind the counter just continued to carry on with his task, not once looking up or greeting the guests that began filling up the breakfast room. Guests kept looking at each other, shaking their heads in disbelief. We watched in amazement for 15 minutes, then left without breakfast - the staff probably did not even notice. For clarification, when I say staff, I don't mean the anonymous silent guys who were doing the dishes behind the counter and never ever took any eye contact with the guests. I am referring to the waiters in red shirts.

Now, I don't know if the breakfast room is run by the hotel or whether it is a separate establishment. Since I paid a higher room rate to have breakfast included, I still feel I can let this experience affect my rating. It was a shame that an otherwise perfect experience had to be tarnished by continuous irritation at breakfast.

Bottom line is: Good hotel, but do NOT pay extra to have breakfast included.

I first stayed here over a year ago and the hotel is even better than I remembered it from last time. I booked in for one night before and one night after a week's trek in the desert. After being welcomed with a free drink, I was given an enormous room to relax in, a balcony to sit out on and a big comfortable bed. The hotel is situated in a quiet street close to Rothschild Boulevard. The friendly staff on the reception desk, who speak excellent English, were very helpful in bringing to my attention the excellent and frequent number 5 bus service on Rothschild (very much cheaper than a taxi). I used this to get to the train station for the start of my trekking tour and, on my return, to go to the Bauhaus Center on the Friday morning for a guided tour in English of some of the examples of Tel Aviv's Bauhaus architectural heritage.

So much about this hotel is absolutely wonderful.

The location is superb. We walked everywhere - to the beach, to the mall, to the Art museum, to Carmel market - even to Jaffa - everything was so easy. There is an excellent deli close by and a superb florist both of which we patronised.

When we arrived there was a "little black dress" exhibition. It's reputation as an "art hotel" is certainly deserved.

The reception staff were uniformly charming and competent. Our daughter (who lives in Jerusalem and picked us up from the airport) was allowed to park in the underground car park whilst we had supper on our arrival day and again when she and a friend came for dinner at the Rothschild hotel another day. On both occasions she only stayed a few hours. However on checkout I was charged $15 a night for overnight parking. This was immediately reversed off the bill when I commented.

We had booked a superior room. For which you get a large sitting room with a small kitchenette and fridge and a separate bedroom. But although I had asked for a quiet room we were on the third floor at the front of the hotel. The road is quite narrow. Taxis and anyone held up by people dropping off to the hotel would beep the horn. Car doors would slam. So we tried to cut down the noise by keeping the windows shut and using the airconditioning. This didn't work either because the A/C unit was quite noisy and as we had it on auto it made a noise when it cut in and out. So we didn't sleep well.

The sitting room was big and the sofa was extremely comfortable for watching TV - lots of international channels including BBC. There was a small table and two kitchen type chairs. But it wasn't really organised so we could have a couple of friends up for drinks in the room - there weren't any easy chairs. The room accordingly looked a bit barren- shame really.

The décor was ultra modern but the home made clothes stands, table coverings and lights just didn't look right to me. The tiling in the bathroom was very seventies, although the shower fittings and other bathroom fittings were very much as expected in a 21st century hotel.

Yet the beds were comfortable and I had no problems with the black sheets and towels. And if we asked for an extra towel or a blanket it appeared almost instantaneously. Great housekeeping service.

Wifi was very good too.

In the morning we didn't really want the hotel breakfast so popped down to the café for their coffee - which was excellent - and took it up to the room.

The atmosphere in the hotel was great, the reception area was always humming, there were a load of lively things going on.

I will happily go back but there would be a full and frank discussion about keeping the A/C fan on continuous and staying at the back of the hotel overlooking the courtyard.

Room Tip: Don't stay at the front of the hotel.
