I stayed at the National for many weeks back in the late 1990s. It was historic, but also going downhill in need of updating. Then, hard financial times forced its closure and it sat vacant for many years. To my delight I discovered it had been renovated recently and I was able to stay there in November 2012. I recommend it highly. The owner, Osama ali Salah, is a wonderful host and he has done a fantastic job at renovating the hotel. Furnishings are tasteful and modern. The all-weather terrace on the 4th floor is a real treat with its airy view. The hotel staff are exceptionally helpful and professional. The location is also excellent, being just around the corner from Salah ed Din Street, the vibrant commercial blvd of East Jerusalem; and just a 10 minute walk to the Old City. It is an ideal locale and now a very pleasant venue. I'll be referring all friends here.

Service at the National was excellent - and particular thanks to Nirvana and Mohamed. They were both very helpful and welcoming. The only problem was the poor lighting in the hotel room - beyond spotlights above the pillow area by the bed, and bathroom area, there were no other lights. Once the sun sets, the room gets very dark. Breakfast is average hotel food - although it seemed that the same was served everyday. Only ate once inside the hotel for dinner - again, the service was impeccable, but the food is not too great. The National Hotel is located close to Herod's gate and has easy access to the old city. If you don't plan to spend much time inside the hotel, this is a comfortable and convenient place to stay. No frills hotel at a reasonable price.

My husband, two sisters, and I had a WONDERFUL time at this hotel. First and foremost is the service. Nirvana (at the front desk) is incredibly helpful and caring. She made the stay truly wonderful. The rest of the staff is all so kind and friendly, from the porters to the food staff at the beautiful restaurant (with great views). It is a short walk to the old city, and completely safe to walk back at night. The rooms are not luxurious, but they are comfortable and have all the necessities. For those inclined to work out, there is a gym, too. I would highly recommend this hotel to anybody who wants good service, a comfortable stay, and excellent (included) breakfast, and easy access to the old city.

If you are in Jerusalem on pilgrimage OR exploring the old walled city, you cant find a better hotel than this one. Situated in East Jerusalem & Palestinian owned, the approach to the hotel may put you off - that's true of anywhere in East Jerusalem as they are not allowed by law to refurbish. Once inside, the hotel is all you could ask for in a 4* and more. The rooms are clean, well equipped (Lots of plug points!!!!), the buffet meals more than adequate. The food in the terrace restaurant (a la carte) is excellent & decently priced. The hotel is a bare 4-5 min. walk to Herod's gate. All in all a winner!!

Nirvana at the front desk delivered a 5-star service. She is truly exceptional in the hospitality industry.

The rest of the hotel is not 4-star, more like 3-star at best. Wifi signal in the room was so weak as to be unusable. Decor was quite worn, esp in the bathroom. State of cleanliness not impressive, i.e. dusty surfaces. Other staff were pleasant enough but I experienced more than once that a member of staff on front desk would serve other customers in the midst of attending to me. Pretty poor neighbourhood.

All in all, and in spite of Nirvana, not a hotel I can recommend at the price I paid ($135/night).

We stayed in the National Hotel for five nights. In general a nice hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. The location could not have been better!! Walking distance to the Herod's gate, very convenient. The rooms are quite comfortable and clean. Wifi connection is not very strong. In the room, I could only connect somewhere near the shower!! :-) Fortunately, I was not in the rush to check my email or load photos of the day. However, if you stay here and you want to 'stay connected' you may want to double check this. ;-) In the restaurant on the 4th floor the service can be slow specially in the evenings. Three out of the five nights we stayed there we had to go back to the reception desk to reactivate our magnetic cards for the rooms. The staff were very efficient and prompt to solve the problem immediately, which is fine, but it was an inconvenience to go back to the reception when all you want to do is to lay down after a long walking day! ;-) All in all a nice hotel with very friendly staff!

Good hotel worthy of 4 star rating. Situated in the chaotic Arab quarter but seemed safe and a short walk to the old city through Herods gate. Rooms clean and modern, reasonably priced restaurant on 4thfloor.
A special mention to the staff who are simply exceptional: efficient at check in despite a large group turning up just before us, friendly throughout, immensely helpful.
