Owner description: Yad Sarah is Israel's largest volunteer-staffed organization, providing a vital array of compassionate health and home care support services for people of all ages. Yad Sarah's free services are delivered in more than 100 branches by over 6,000 volunteers. This humanitarian organization provides services to all without regard to race, political or religious affiliation, socioeconomic status. Although the organization is best-known for its extensive lending service for medical equipment, volunteers also advocate for older adults at-risk for abuse, drive people with special needs to medical appointments, school or work in our wheelchair-accessible vans, reach out to the homebound and staff our day rehabilitation programs as well as our play center for children with special needs. More than 400,000 people use Yad Sarah services annually.

“A First Hand Look at Community Service Israeli Style”

A short walk from the entrance to the Har Herzel Military Cemetery on Sderot Herzel is the Jerusalem headquarters of Yad Sarah. Clean, neat and modern it is a joy to visit and informative as well.

The Yad Sarah organization sprang up over 30 years ago from literally nothing and to-day provides all manner of practical assistance to seniors or indeed anyone requiring assistance in independant living. With over 300 branch offices throughout Israel they also fulfill the role of a 'drop in centre' for seniors and families with special needs.

Entirely funded by donation and run by 6,000 volunteers, Yad Sarah is a shining example of a practical Israeli solution to an issue which in other countries costs the State many millions of dollars.

Check out their website ahead of your visit. It is packed with links to many informative articles. You can arrange a tour of their facilities. If you are in Israel for an extended stay (over 3 months) it is possible to volunteer here.

They have a small gift shop in the lobby to the left of the main entrance. I'm sure you will find something of interest. And by buying something here you will know you are supporting their endeavours.

There is a light rail stop just in front so you can catch the train back downtown. However I always prefer to walk down Jaffa road and explore unknown spots on my way back.

A visit here will really make your whole trip feel meaningfull !
