“One of the best in Israel”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Israel is a tricky place restaurant wise for tourists. Mostly good food and horrible service although they are improving.

Derech Hagefen breaks with Israeli service, atmosphere and food.

This is our second visit to Derech Hagefen. What makes that more interesting is that we are not coming from Jerusalem to eat there but rather traveling 45 minutes from Tel Aviv to dine there. Sima the owner built her restaurant in moshav outside of the city ofad Jerusalem. It is a quiet, cozy space located inside of a plant nursery surrounded by beauty and atmosphere.

But the food and service is what really sets is apart. This is a dairy, kosher establishment. Fish is the only "meat" served here. What the chef has been able to construct out of the freshest of ingredients is nothing short of fantastic.

The daily specials included an asparagus risotto topped with a fried zucchini blossom filled with cheese, an artichoke salad with parm, a beautifully cooked fish and house olives. All were amazing. The salads are simply dressed and fresh. The pastas are unique and full of flavor.

Anyone looking for a unique dining experience just outside of Jerusalem needs to check out Derech Hagefen or their sister property, Itamar.

“A gem under the Jerusalem hills”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

You will never find this place by chance, it is nested in the foot hills of Jerusalem in the far end of Kfar Beit Zait - "village of House of Olive"
The view from the village is breathtaking and as you walk in, through the garden to the restaurant, you are so rounded by beautifully arranged garden, mixed with trees, flowers, herbs and vegetables that some are used in the restaurant' kitchen.
The seating is in and out within the surrounding garden and offer you relaxing atmosphere and view.
And now we get to the food! Just an amazing, creative and innovative selection from different ethnic cultures and taste. The Chef-Ilan, put his genius and heart into every dish, which is always unique and prepared like nothing you ever ate anywhere. I like every dish we tried even once I do not usually eat.
O' ya, the service. While It is not a 7 star class service, it is component and friendly. It could be improved and polished a bit, but if you are nice a friendly you will surely leave happy
So how do I sum it up? The place is rather expensive, but you cannot afford not to try it at least once.
And to the complainers about the price, I have had some lousy foods for higher prices, so appreciate the positive and get ready to enjoy a great meal in a beautiful surrounding.

“Very disappointed by my recent visit”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Yes the location and setting is wonderful and i love their sister restaurant Cafe Itamar, but the service and the quality has gone down.

First of all I called to book lunch on a Friday but was told there was a problem with their computers and i should call back to book on Friday am. When I did, they said they dont take bookings on Friday but we should just come and it would be fine. We arrived at 11.30 to a line of about 20 people and were told it would be a 20--30 min wait. The cut off for ordering breakfast is 12.00 so I was not happy. It is also a pet hate of mine when places don't do breakfast/brunch all day on a Friday - it makes no sense, especially for a place that is popular for brunch.

Luckily we got our table just in time and I had to flag down a waitress and insist that I needed to order before the 12 cut off. I ordered a simple eggs benedict without onion because I have an allergy to onion.

It came with onion in the spinach - i sent it back. The second one came with no spinach at all and the eggs were totally overcooked. I sent it back.

The 3rd time i got salmon instead of the spinach - apparently they didnt have any plain spinach. I found the salmon overly fishy and took it out and the eggs were once again over cooked. The hollandaise sauce was broken and too vinegary, it was all a huge disappointment.

If you cannot make poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, dont have eggs benedict on the menu!

My mother got one a fritata which was nice but just came with a salad and no dips.

Yes the setting is nice but there are so many great places to go for brunch where the food is far better, that I will not be returning to Derech Hagefen again.
