“Sifting the Jerusalem detrius makes giddy kids of us all”

Would you believe we found rings, small and large mosiacs, and our neighbor actually found a Roman coin? I found this tough to take, but it's the REAL deal. The pile of muddy detrius is from the Temple Mount and legit. The anticipation of genuine archiological finds makes kids of us all and we jump up and down with childish delight. The sessions start with a short lecture followed by buckets full of mud and a screening process outside but under cover. Its the muddy screening process that is suited to discoverers of all ages. A great few hour experience within view, but just outside of the old city walls. A great family adventure at reasonable cost. Take a cab to the site.

“Once in a Lifetime Visit”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

Everyone should visit Israel. My visit was a great learning trip and a personal experience that will last a lifetime. To walk where Jesus walked was thrilling to me. From the time I arrived in Tel Aviv till I left 10 days later I enjoyed every bit of it.

“Temple Mount Sifting Project”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

This archaeology-oriented activity (under the auspices of the City of David park) was an excellent hands-on introduction to the history of the temple mount. It begins with a relatively short overview of the different periods associated with building on the temple mount, from the time of the first temple to the present. The guides discuss the different types of construction in the context of history.

Afterward, everyone gets a chance to sift through materials dumped after the most recent expansion of the Solomon's Stables section. The guides provide examples of the types of materials to look for - ceramics, pottery, tiles, mosaics, metals, glass, coins. You are provided with a sifting tray to find and separate the materials. Afterwards, another guide collects all the items found during the session and discusses the period from which they were from based on known characteristics of items from each time period. We found pottery from the time of the first temple, pottery pieces from the second temple period, numerous Roman and Byzantine mosaic tiles, floor tiles from the post-Byzantine period, as well as metal chunks and nails from the second temple period.

Our kids begged for more time there, and we would consider even going back specifically to volunteer on this project. It was utterly fascinating and engaging for all ages.
